Recently watched the entire Chihayafuru series and ended up completely mesmerized by competitive Karuta. Anyone know if there are any Japanese social clubs dedicated to Competitive Karuta in the San Diego or Los Angeles area? Been researching but haven't had any luck. Really want to see this up close before the Chihayafuru bug wears off Good opportunity to learn new things about the Japanese culture.

Thanks for any info.

I can't answer your question, but I really wish there was an English version of Karuta. Kind of a weird wish since I should just learn Japanese, and the game itself is intrinsically connected to Japanese culture... but still, I really want to play the game in my mother tongue. So far, I haven't found a set of English poems that could work for it. ( -_-)

I did some research on English versions of Karuta and there just doesn't seem to be any out there. Also the feel and profound nature of the original Japanese Karuta would be lost. The cultural aspect is very important and beautiful so...

I was told that there are a couple of clubs/societies that are involved in playing competitive Karuta so hopefully we will be able to see it up close and personal soon. If you want we can send you some pictures or video of the events taking place? that is if we can actually find them and gain access.

If we do get to meet some people involved in Karuta, would you want me to ask them if they know of any in your city? you never know

Looks like there is a Japanese Student Association at UCSD ( http://ucsdjsa.org/ )that plays Karuta at least sometimes (http://ucsdjsa.org/?page_id=1655).

Even if you aren't affiliated with UCSD, I'd bet that the people in that group would be happy to talk to you about it, and may have some other ideas on how to get involved.
