Over at Kotaku, they posted a story about how a thousand Japanese people were asked who their “most favorite” manga artists were.

It was done by the website Charapedia.

Out of the thousand who participated, 52 percent were men, 48 percent were women, 72.5 percent were in their teens and twenties, and 27.5 percent were in their thirties and up.

20. Izumi Tsubaki (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun)

19. Takeshi Obata (Death Note)

18. Takehiko Inoue (Slam Dunk)

17. Tite Kubo (Bleach)

16. Clamp (Cardcaptor Sakura)

15. Yusei Matsui (Assassination Classroom)

14. Tadatoshi Fujimaki (Kuroko’s Basketball)

13. Cocoa Fujiwara (Inu x Boku SS, Vol. 1)

12. Hajime Isayama (Attack on Titan)

11. Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter × Hunter)

10. Yana Toboso (Black Butler)

9. Gosho Aoyama (Detective Conan)

8. Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto)

7. Sui Ishida (Tokyo Ghoul)

6. Rumiko Takahashi (InuYasha)

5. Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

4. Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist)

3. Akira Toriyama (Dragonball)

2. Eiichiro Oda (One Piece)

1. Hideaki Sorachi (Gintama)

It seems there are quite a few people who were upset over Sorachi beating out Oda for the #1 one spot. Don't get me wrong, I love Oda and One Piece, but Sorachi is knocking it out of the park with Gintama, and as a well established super fan, I am more than happy to see him in that #1 spot.

Well, I'm happy CLAMP is there though I'd rather they be represented for Tokyo Babylon and X...

Likewise, I'd rather see Rumiko Takehashi on there for Masion Ikkoku than Inuyasha. I mean...Maison Ikkoku is the greatest romance series of all time and still is beloved in Japan! Why Inuyasha? >_>

Inuyasha is more recent and probably more popular. But Rumiko is a goddess, Urusei Yatsura, Ranma, Inuyasha, Maison Ikkoku and even Mermaid Saga... I feel that she has way more influence on the industry than almost everyone on this list, maybe tied with Toriyama and CLAMP.

I was under the impression that the works in parentheses were just there as examples of their notable works, and the vote was for the mangaka's work overall? The Kotaku article wasn't very clear though.

That's what I took it as, they were just examples they are known for.

Sorachi deserves it!!! He's amazing and i love him tho right now i want to end him because gintama is hell on earth lately >.>

but I am so glad to see Izumi Tsubaki and Hiromu Arakawa on that list. Very much deserved! A comedian who doesn't rely on dirty humor to be absolutely hilarious (i still love u gorilla) and an author who excels in plot and character development are rare gems and I am glad Japan recognizes their talent.
