So today, knowing I love Luffy as he's one of my most favorite characters, a couple of friends of mine ripped on Luffy on a whole new level. One watches One Piece (upto Fishman Island Arc, so he's pretty far in), the other one doesn't watch One Piece (watched upto Loguetown like 7 years back I think) and can be an asshole and kind of close minded when it comes to characters, so he might've been a bit serious.

HOWEVER, trolling as they were, I didn't go serious about the debates. But you know, they were saying some really annoying things.
Their critiques:
- Sanji and Zoro are exponentially better because of their "feeling human." (friend who watches One Piece went deeper on this)
- Luffy can't swim (lol, the one who doesn't watch)
- Luffy doesn't love, and is restricted to very simple emotions.
- Yamcha can beat him (sigh, I hate cross comparing characters, but just lmfao)
- He is hardly developed.
- His premise is too generic and there manages to be no reality behind him
- ... the list goes on. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Why do you hate Luffy if you do?
And, you know, I have so many counterexamples if you wanna get serious, but I have a feeling the majority of responses will be trolling cause of how idiotically half serious I am about this.
But it's so painful to hear hate towards one of your tops :'(

Luffy is both hard as nails and infectiously optimistic. He's likable through a gazillion episodes and I've never stopped cheering for him. Haters can hate for whatever reason they want but that has nothing to do with how you feel about it.

Not Yamcha.

Luffy is one of the best MC's. The fact that he only gets serious a few times in the anime makes you excited when he does!

I only got up to whatever arc is focused on fire fist ace. I liked luffy as a character, He's goofy but can get serious when needed, and even lay down some law as captain. Him and usopp (though i really hate usopp). As for him being generic, i feel like he set the character and the rest are based off of him to some degree, but idk if that's true. Luffy is one of the only "pure good" Mc's that i like

TL;DR I like luffy. one of my favorite, well rounded mc's

I think Luffy would wreck Yamcha, personally. Bro, do you even fourth gear or Haki?

The reason I really like Luffy is because even though he really loves adventure, he always lets people fight their own battles, at least as far as they can witthout help. A very good example of this is in the Arlong arc. He waited until Nami asked him to step in, even though you could tell all he wanted to do was make some fishman sushi. KOTOR 2's main story focused on this, even if you follow the true path of the Jedi, you still get shamed in the end because you took away others' chance to be a hero, you stole their adventures just to make yourself stronger. Luffy makes sure everyone around him gets as much fun and adventure as they want. He brings out the hero in even the most cowardly of people. Usopp is still better though.

If any anime taught me anything about certain aspects of life the biggest one for me was One Piece. There are so many points in the series that do get dull but those moments start to add up and, And BOOM something happens whether it be luffy or his crew or the story itself. luffy had huge progressions when it came down to it and he showed up with many close calls. I have a huge respect for what Oda has made regardless of how bad the anime can get because of Toei Animation, How ever it is a ton of work to make a weekly anime as well as manga. After all the thought of Yamcha beating Luffy is like saying Sakura could beat Yamcha and even than would be an even fight therefore I ship them.

I could only stand to watch about 120 episodes, but during that time Luffy was by far my least favorite part of the experience.

I felt that the dumb hungry guy archetype was taken...just a bit too far. Kind of bored me to tears, to be honest. Knowing that every arc would end up being resolved by him finally putting down his food to get 'serious' because his friends were in trouble started to wear a little thin after a while. It would have been easier to stomach if his powers weren't so absurd, and if he had shown any growth. That's why I was able to enjoy Dragon Ball so much more.

I also find Reed Richards to be pretty dumb as well. Maybe I have a thing against stretchy people.

I agree with much of the praise, as per usual of a OP fanboy.

He's just someone, if he were real, I think I could follow. He's pure, honest, and has a dream he wishes to make true. He is mainly just inspirational tbh, and brings much of the value of shounen in my mind. He brings out the best in those around him and gains allies just like that because of his unusual charisma. He goes the extra mile for others.
He can get so badass though, especially when he's pissed off, being epic in the world, or showing off that captain side.
Well, in any event, he's awesome. I don't know what else could be said.

Honestly I know very little about him since I never watched it, I think he can stretch his arms just for you, inflate himself just like a balloon in other words he is just a rip off of Lanky kong. well luffy was before dk64 so I guess lanky is a rip off of luffy? huh...
