I believe – and I say this as a fan of the genre since I was a kid going googly-eyed at Robotech and Voltron in the '80s – that mecha, which has never had a very big fan base outside Japan, has already had its heyday, and has gone back to being a niche. There are good titles (I personally like Aldnoah), and there are not-so-good titles (Cross Ange, IMO), but the sheer quantity is not what it used to be. This is all right by me, as there is a huge back catalog of titles from previous decades.

You can almost never go wrong with Gundam series imho. Even Seed/Destiny was was still good. And I REALLY liked the last season of Build Fighters. the new G Gundam is getting me excited. But I am a Gundam Fanboy.

From what i have seen in last year or two we have maybe gotten a handful if that much of good or decent mecha anime. I may be wrong but it seems that's way to me. Im just curious for everyone's opinions.

I don't know. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and the first Gundam: The Origin OVA were pretty great. And Build Fighters was solid.

It's become a mainstream genre and it's been flooded with some poor quality anime imo. Some of my favorites are
Aldnoah.Zero
Gurren Lagann
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
Asura Cryin'
and Heroic Age.

It's been a mainstream genre since the 80's, way back with the creation of Gundam. The anime industry almost crashed in the 90's because anime got flooded with too many trashy mecha. That is until Evangelion saved anime.

I enjoy most of Gundam. Most of it. But I despise Seed and Seed Destiny. Everybody is allowed to enjoy what they will, of course, but I will never warm to the Cosmic Era. Especially considering that it followed Turn A Gundam, which is about one thousand times better, IMO (and was supposed to be the end of the franchise).

Well there's also Fafner.. unless that one doesn't count somehow.

But as of late there aren't exactly a lot of mecha shows. Ones who mostly put out new ones are Sunrise. Which half the time are either Gundam or in some way rather over the top :p

So a lack of great mecha is understandable since there just isn't much mecha that is being made in the first place.

I suspect it will keep at it like this unless someone manages to pull off something earth-shattering with the genre that revives it.

Are you looking for Super Robot or Newtype? Gurren Lagann is almost 10 years old now and Eureka Seven is 10 years old. Makes you feel old as shit.

Well, if you are asking about mecha anime recently, then yes. While not everything can be like Gundam 00, Gurren Lagann, Evangelion, or Code Geass, there just hasn't been any mecha recently that has even come close. We have way too many stinkers in shows like Daimidaler, Dai-Shogun, Captain Earth, and Buddy Complex, there is a great one in Knights of Sidonia, while there are also a few good ones that are worth checking out in Aldnoah.Zero and Valvrave. But yes, I can see that there just hasn't been quite as much good stuff as far as mecha shows go seeing how the genre has just been in a bad slump recently.

I actually like "Cross Ange" even had its plots error but manage to end the show well. A.Z. wasn't fond of it but i really like the music from that show. I.S. season 1 was good, S2 meh, wonder if they get season 3 going but that will never happen. Waiting on the next season of Gargantia. Gotta start watching Evangelion and Code Geass since I haven't watch them yet

Granted there hasn't been a lot of Great Mecha shows.

I liked Cross Ange (Slow Start but really came through in the 2nd half), Buddy Complex (The time travel gimmick was a bit wonky, but the character relationships were good and had a nice payoff in the specials for the ending, even if it was a bit rushed) and Captain Earth (Character Relationships on the good guys side were good, Akari pulling of the most Bad Ass Bluff (She really would have done it, methinks), the show really suffered from having Lame Villains with the Planetary Gears, Salty Dog, and Puck.

The only show that needs to be mentioned is RahXephon, which is my favorite Mecha show.

I hate anime that uses CGI. It really looks horrible. New mecha anime seems to be using CGI graphics more and more every year.

It makes it a lot harder for me to stomach watching that genre anymore.
