So there are a number of threads discussing sexism already, and one claim that keeps cropping up. "We shouldn't sexualize women. The sexual objectification of women is bad."

For the record sexualization is "to make something sexual in character or quality, or to become aware of sexuality" and sexual objectification is "the act of treating a person as an instrument of sexual pleasure" (from the respective Wikipedia articles).

But wait, are those really bad things? Don't we need to see our partners in a sexual light and treat them as instruments of sexual pleasure in order to procreate? Isn't sex (usually) a good thing we should want more of? Perhaps asking us to repress our biological imperatives is a bit silly.

I don't think sexualization is bad, assuming it's not getting in the way of something.

Nope. People just enjoy being offended by trivial things because our lives have pretty much gotten that dull.

It becomes bad when you think that someones only worth is their sexual attributes. But really, if there are people that bad out there, do we need to give them the time of day?

I think excessive fanservice is bad for anime. It makes the medium less accessible and more niche.

I wouldn't want to be treated by my partner, let alone someone I don't know, as an instrument for their sexual pleasure.

Not sure what would make you think that sexual objectification is NOT a bad thing. As for sexualization, I think that's more of a culture than anything else. A wikipedia definition doesn't entail all of what sexualization is.

One thing that really really got me was a documentary I watched once on the porn industry. And if you want to argue against pornography having anything to do with sexualization, I will say that your statement is baseless. Regardless, the documentary showed how regular, pretty 18 year old girls that found an extremely easy way to make money entered the business. It explains how the common shelf life of a porn actress is 4 months and shows very well why that's the case. I think what the porn industry has become, how easily accessible porn is, and the normalization of porn is a huge example of what the sexualization culture perpetuates (especially here in the US).

Going to be really blunt here because im getting tired of being nice in my responses on these kinds of threads.
no and anyone who says it is; should fuck off.

Getting so tired of seeing these threads on the forums that I have actually been avoiding coming onto crunchyroll except to update my profile.

When did crunchyroll become a meeting ground of such prudes?

It seems like all these threads pretend as if men are not sexualized what so ever and if they are its "not as bad as when its a woman"

People need to stop acting like such goddamn special snowflakes. No one is being hurt by anything, and if they feel like less of a person because of it then they should stop being such thinned skinned baby's.

Give me a goddamn break.

Some people get off on that, though. It's an actual fetish.

Why do you need to put a sexy women next to a hamburger to sell it? Imagine if they started using hot guys to sell women's products

Sexual objectification in media is not inherently bad, nor is it particularly bad in a vacuum. It only becomes problematic when it's systemic--which is to say, it's the norm. That distinction is a very important caveat people on both sides of the debate tend to forget.

EDIT: And to clarify, it is in fact the norm in many mediums, which is why you see the topic brought up so often surrounding movies, games and anime.

The only time I've seen this is with clothing brands like aero and fitch and they have both male and female models.

I can see this thread spiraling out of control.
