No, but it shouldn't be the only thing that sells the anime. The anime should have a good story and good characters.

Men are expected to control their hormones and not act on them in a way that makes women feel threatened or uncomfortable.

This does not mean that men are not allowed to have bloody freaking hormones, feel attraction, or get horny. For the love of God we're all guilty of that. Sexualization is not equivalent to sexism at all. Having fantasies are not the same as acting on them. It's like radical feminists don't want men to feel attracted to them at all.

And frankly, you very minority of radicals feminists are probably the most sexist bunch I've heard from. Being masculine and sexual is apparently sexually empowering while feminine and sexual gets you reduced to being called a sex object. I'm sorry, but we don't have to be men in order to be equal. Whether you are a female who falls within typical feminine gender roles or a female who doesn't, you're of equal worth. I'm love how men seem to get that more than you people. Most of these guys would probably give you the royal treatment, because sexualization is in no way equivalent of sexism. They aren't a bunch of sexists out to get you they're guys that usually really like women.

Keep crying about men being attracted to women though, maybe one day you'll actually grow a pussy.

For better of the word, it also gets our attention pretty easily, which animation companies use to try and get us to watch a series. The point sexualization becomes bad is when the sexualization of characters starts to overshadow the actual story.

But to each their own righto?

This: I won't watch a show just for scantily clad women. It has to tell a story or make me laugh/feel for the characters.

If you're talking about anime ,then the bottom line is that the a lot of the Fan service needs to go in order to appeal to a wider demographic. You can talk all you like about your philosophical musings about sexism and it's definitions, but in the final analysis if you ever want to attain a higher level of critical legitimacy and public acclaim then a lot of the panty shots, high school uniforms featuring micro skirts, and gravity defying disproportionate breast sizes are going to have to go.If you watch anime for sexual stimulation then I suggest you check out Hentai.I've been watching anime for many many years and would like to see the state of the art move past it's adolescence and take it's place with other more widely accepted art forms that I think it richly deserves.

I do agree on your point that there a lot of anime now that give a lot of fan service and a whole lot of nothing else. I don't think it's a problem with sexualization rather than the lack of depth and creativity in a majority of anime now. There's not a ton of variety. Fan service is okay, but they really shouldn't be relying on it for sales. Kind of sick of the school settings lately. I avoid what anime I don't care for though and that's the most we can do as consumers. Show them what we care for and less for what we don't.

I don't think there's any question that "sex sells", however the real cost of such marketing strategies is the artform itself.

I agree with several posters above. Fan service/sexualization doesn't really bother me, but when there's too much and no actual plot in sight, then I become annoyed. I like actual story, plot, character development. Bouncing boobs and endless panty shots don't do that for me. When that's the case however, I simply opt out of watching it. I mean, there are far more important things that I could be putting thought into instead of...oh, I dunno, the laughable boob physics in the Dead or Alive franchise or something--I really love DOA though.

Honestly, it's not that serious to me. People like what they like, and others don't like what they don't like. You can't make everybody happy; someone will always be offended by what something stands for or what somebody does or says--such is life.

When something annoys me, all I can do is get over it and move on if it's not negatively affecting my life.

Besides, sexual attraction isn't a bad thing.

@ PrinceJudar and Legendzerox: very well said.

Scale is very accurate.

Unfortunate truth. Going to miss my Miyazaki films. Hopefully more people step up to the plate though, and it's up to us to support them from there.

Husband: Hey can you make dinner tonight? There's football game on tonight.
Radical Feminist Wife: How dare you ask me to cook for you while you revel in your 'macho' activities. If you want dinner make it yourself!
Husband: Jesus calm down, I don't care if it's as quick as a sandwich.
Radical Feminist Wife: Sandwich!?!?! *draws knife
Husband: Wtf
Radical Feminist Wife: Time to kill you, no worries they won't blame me after I give myself some fresh bruises.
Husband: Holy fuck.
