How important is the American flag to Americans?

It's obvious they don't like us. But most of these are things that normal people don't control. The government acts like the world police. So what is someone like me, a 14 year old, suppose to do about it? And things that happened centuries ago aren't things we should have to apologize for if we know it was wrong, like slavery. It's obviously not ok, and everyone knows that.

I don't really care about the official American flag. The confederate one seems to be more of an issue... And what exactly should America be apologizing for? Why should civilians that live now have to apologize? Only people who've done crimes should have to apologize for anything.

Well said I couldn't have said it better myself ^_^

I would wager it would depend on which americans you survey, don't you think? Its a symbol of national identity, a banner to tell the world who we are, our bloody history and heritage, our allegience, like all other flags. But the degree of patriotism varies , some its nonexistent.

Every time someone brings up the "slavery" issue, I always respond, "Gee, that sounds bad...Whaddya want us to do, ABOLISH it?"

Yea, that was my point. It's not an issue anymore, but for some reason, people from other countries seem to want us to apologize for it happening, as if we were alive then

America is America, it came a long way to be created. Yes, bad things had happened and things still happen, but you have to think what's outside of America. Once one empire falls another will rise up and take over. Everyone that's saying,"I hate America, I hate the past," Well, are you going to let another empire like Russia (for example) take over? We fight to protect what's inside our country, we try to find solutions to fix things for the future. You cannot change it's past. Research history, look at the wars, raping, killing and other empires that dominated the lands. It's been going on since the beginning of time. Except, back then people took over and extinct races or intermix so much to create a new culture, at least the people that are still here are protected which they don't realise it.

We try to fix things to make everyone happy. Some natives love it here while others hate it. They have been fighting each other and against native Hispanic since when? Just like when Europeans fought each other. We're all human and we all have emotions. There's always going to be thieves, murders, rapist, ect in any shape, color or form of human being. Slavery has been done since the beginning of time and sadly had happen in America too. Some Africans weren't slaves, there were free Africans that lived here too. Poor immigrants came over as well, some were "servents" in the beginning of colonization and so forth later treated like crap. That history in America has been repeated for the Hispanic that had to give up their language like the Irish, polish, hungrians, ect just to survive. There were reasons that they came over here too just like any other modern day immigrants. But that's where political correctness steps in and brainwash people. When Americans are mixed like the modern Egyptians maybe one day we have a better nation than we have now. Hopefully...

Every country has skeletons in it's closet and you shouldn't let past mistakes define who or what you are now. Like in life you make a mistake and you move on from it.

All I know is despite the problems that America has it's still one of the better countries in the world. When the people we consider our "poor" still mostly have housing, cell phones, TV, electricity, a car, and 3 meals a day the country can't be all that bad. And yes I'm aware that not everybody has that but the point is there are countries out there with poor that would consider our poor rich.

In my experience traveling a bit around Europe last year that the America hate is pretty overblown. The vast majority of people I came across are pretty indifferent to America and are more concerned with their own affairs than worrying about what America is doing and a number of people like America.

I find it somewhat disturbing that people keep refering to the USA as America, because America is an entire continent. To me, it's like calling a single European country Europe.

Because every nation on earth has engaged in slavery and killing other people. Never heard of slaves in China or the barbary slave trade? Heard about Ukrainian or Armenian genocide? Didn't think so.

Hey now, let's not shortchange the South Americans.

Seriously though, I get what you mean. It's probably because many of us here in the U.S. don't really think about the other countries in our hemisphere.

I didn't shortchange South Americans, I never said they weren't Americans, they are Americans as well https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas Or maybe I didn't understand what you meant by shortchanged.

Ehh we just got used to it and I don't see us changing how we call our country also I just realized how uncreative our name is, our country is in North America and we have lots of states like is that the best we can do.
