As a fan of older anime, I was pleased to find the Fist of the North Star TV series on Crunchyroll. However, when I started watching it, I was surprised to find that the quality of the video is extremely poor.

There is noticeable pixilation, aliasing of lineart and an overall blurry, faded appearance with highly saturated colours.

Compare the Cruncyroll streams (images 1 & 3) with a fansub I found elsewhere online (images 2 & 4):

Though the video is supposedly 480p, it looks substantially worse than the SD/DVD quality you might expect – even compared with other, older anime on Cruncyroll (the video quality on Dallos (also an SD 1980s) series looks considerably better).

I know that Discotek Media (whom CR have a relationship with) hold the license for this on DVD, and that their recent DVD release of Fist of the North Star uses Toei’s re-mastered HD scan. Why can’t CR use Discotek as a source rather than unacceptably bad version currently being streamed?

Probably the same answer as it always is - licensing. CR "having a relationship" with Discotek doesn't mean they can use Discotek's masters , especially since one is licensed for DVD and the other for streaming.

It sucks, but it's the way the world works.

Thanks, out of interest - do CR have admins on here to answer posts like this (I'm new here)?

If not, maybe I'll email them directly?

The short answer is that it would require a new license, as this and other older Toei shows were licensed directly from Toei, who was also responsible for providing the video masters.

Frankly, if Air Master and the first few episodes of Pretty Cure I viewed were any indication, I doubt these are even 480p, as the artifacted audio would indicate they may be derived from a previous online source using an inferior compression technology (as I don't remember even VHS sounding that bad).

Like most businesses, Crunchy rarely details or discusses the inner workings.

Ah, so it's really down to Toei then. Shame they aren't showing their older titles the respect they deserve.

I recently got hold of the Animeigo Bubblegum Crisis Blu-ray and it made me appreciate how beautiful older anime can look when remastered into HD.
