They are also hedging their bets in case a GATE from another plane opens up ...

YES !! GATE !!!!!

On August 20XX, a gate suddenly appears in Tokyo's Ginza district, unleashing a portal where monsters, medieval knights and other fantasy beings come from another world and wreak havoc on Tokyo. The Japanese Defense Force take action against these monsters and push them back into the "Gate". Third Reconnaissance Team is dispatched to the "Special Region" lead by officer (and otaku) Youji Itami. On their travels, they are joined by a beautiful elf girl who is a survivor from the dragon's rampage and guide the group across the dangerous new world

Japan should just build some nukes and call it a day. After all nukes are the ultimate in ' self defence'.

That is unconstitutional under Japan's current constitution.

It's good to see a generation that remembers all too well the suffering of the Japanese commoner in WWII.Throw Abe out!

Proud to have Japan as an ally but man is it sad to see them breaking away from peace. Especially since it does not seem to be the will of its people.

Yeah forsure! I think the rest of the world view them as producer/marketing Gods, at least that's what I view them as Any type of aggression just doesn't fit them. Remember the last time they had an offense military? Barely 70 years ago, and still haunts today's generation.

I definitely don't have a problem with Japan building up the military forces. Germany has a military right? Then Japan should be allowed to. I don't trust china and N.Korea though I'd hope nothing ever happened its silly not to prepare for the worst.

Japan has done well for itself without needing to have a strong military presence. It's no surprise that the people would be strongly against this. If the Japanese government actually cares for how its people feel, then I imagine this won't go anywhere. Defending allies is one thing, but Japan doesn't want to get involved in the United States' military activities right now.

Japan's Self Defense Forces should be used for one purpose, self defense. The Japanese do realize they have to protect themselves; what they are protesting here is a changing of their constitution that would allow the government to send troops into overseas conflicts that have nothing to do with them. This change is also unconstitutional. Increase defense spending as much as you want, but do not get involved in other people's affairs. Kick Abe out, his approval ratings are at their lowest.

The problem isn't military build up, if this legislation passes it will allow Japan to fight in overseas wars with the US, and it's clear the Japanese don't want this.

Without the protection of the US armed forces and their limited JSDF Japan would be a prime target to invade and take over rather quickly. There is no "rifle behind every blade of grass" and with only 260,000 effectives, for over 100,000,000 people...

Ok I see. If they don't want it then the bill shouldn't be passed America doesn't need more allies fight with us anyway . We have the equipment and its better if other countries don't get sucked in to the void that is "helping" other nations.
