Hmmm, in the first place we need to define what "church" is. For me it is an institution created by man in order to worship God. This means you must be a believer. However the problem is separating the true believers from the fanatics. True believers are one who places themselves below their faith and lets it guide their actions. Fanatics places themselves above their faith and use it as an excuse for their actions. As you can see both are faithful however one will kill you with no qualms while the other will try to understand you within their belief system. However church is filled with people. EVERYONE IS BIASED no matter how enlightened you are. Now for me the ideal church is where you will go to celebrate life as well as a sanctuary, a place to feel loved, and be loved as well as to be safe. Alas since the church is made of us, we can never approached this ideal........

A very conservative church, america is being plagued with evil blasphemous liberal churches that are allowing gay marriage, praying with muslims etc..

It's extremely annoying when all I hear is: "How is your walk with God?" And then I'm asked uncomfortable questions while people pretend they are so holy.

I totally get where you're coming from. I find it's so easy for church's to get gossipy and rumors do tend to spread.
But the way my pastor puts it "There are no perfect churches. And if you find one, don't go to it, because you'll ruin it".
It's all about focusing on the reason why we're all fellowshipping together.

I've been going to the same church for nearly 20 years. It has changed a lot from what it used to be and I'm hardly even recognized as a member anymore. The people act so righteous and nosy, I find it hard to talk to them so I don't, and then they don't have a reason to talk to me and it just repeats. I'm agnostic now as well. I pretty much only go because my family goes and I want to satisfy them but I do wish the people weren't like this. I've read the Bible probably over a hundred times during those years so it's not as though I know any less than them. I don't get what their problem is. It's like they NEED to gossip and get nosy and put up a facade. I don't. I'm certainly not a model Christian and my standards of expected behavior aren't particularly high. It's sort of hard to have a united fellowship when the people around you are abrasive.

I'm sorry you have to go through that. When that starts to happen I find it's best to then move on to another church. I've actually had to witness a church I grew up in split up and disperse after two of the pastors had an argument. It really hits hard when you see people you considered family turning on each other and picking sides. That's why it's also super important to get involved in some sort of small group. My closest group of friends all met at church. And while some have moved on to other churches, we still all meet together and fellowship/pray for each other. It helps a whole heck of a lot. I'll be praying for you and your church.
