Hi!

I've read a lot of posts about the order we should be watching the fate series, but i'm still completly lost. Some of you says we should read the visual novel, but can you tell me what is a visual novel and if they're many, by which one should I begin with.

Thanks a lot guys and have a great day :D

P.S.: I know there is a lot of post about this already, but i'm still very confused

I've moved this to the Advice, Info, Recommendations thread.

A visual novel is part "novel" part game. It's basically a game with still images on screen, and audio/text that tells a story, as well as some interaction called for by the person playing/reading.

I'm not familiar with the Fate/Stay Night VNs (and have limited exposure to VNs of any kind), so I'll leave more details to to others.

But really, what order to watch in, and whether or not the VN experience is really necessary (I'm told it can take about 60 hours!) is all a matter of opinion, so you probably can just dive in however and have a good experience.

Ok thanks for the infos! 60 hours is way too much, so i'll stick to the anime. For the order I heard that you can spoil yourself by listen to them in a wrong order, that's why I want to be careful

A VN is sort of like a choose-your-own adventure novel, but with pictures (sometimes some animation is involved; usually the pictures are mostly static), music, and sometimes voice overs.

In most of them, you watch the story play out, and then periodically make choices that affect the story line. Do you want to go to class or go hang out in the courtyard? Do you want to investigate the disturbance or leave it alone? How do you respond to the person who just told you a piece of shocking information: with indignation, with understanding, or with silence?

Depending on those choices, you will get to know different people and see different events, and eventually the game will dump you on one of several different "routes" or "arcs"--often one arc corresponding to each of the potential love interests. Within each route, there is usually both "good" and "bad' endings, again depending on the choices that you make. Once you are done with an arc or an ending, you can load up a previous saved game--or just start a new game and click the "skip previously read text" button--and play through a different route or ending making different choices.

When people say "it takes 60 hours to finish", they usually mean that it takes that long to read through ALL of the endings.

In the original Fate/Stay Night anime, they told the story of one of those arcs--called "Fate"--all the way through to one of the possible endings for that arc. In Fate/Stay: Unlimited Blade Works they told the story of a different plot arc, all the way through to its ending. (Fate/Zero is a prequel series, based on a light novel that was inspired by the original VN.) There is a third plot arc in the VN, Heaven's Feel, that has not yet been animated.

Did you read the first post in this thread: /forumtopic-866973/fateguide-everything-you-need-to-know-to-get-into-the-series?

I think it gives some great advice, and in the case of the "Patient" suggestion, the good news is that Fate/Stay Night UBW is now finished and ready to start watching. Not sure what the latest news is about the Heaven's Feel movie though.

The Fate/Stay Night anime is based on the Visual Novel/game, which is split into three main story paths depending on your choices in the game. The first route, "Fate", focuses on the character of Sabre. The second route, "Unlimited Blade Works", focuses on Tousaka Rin. The third route, "Heavens Feel", focuses on Matou Sakura.

The 2006 anime series was mainly based on the Fate route but did include elements of the other two routes as well. It appears to be a bit of a divisive series as some people seem to love it while others see the mixed up routes as a flawed interpretation of the visual novel.

The 2010 anime film follows the Unlimited Blade Works route but due to the length of air time it is a very condensed version. The 2014/15 series is a more faithful interpretation of the Unlimited Blade Works route but does skip over some of the detail revealed in the Fate route (such as Sabre's backstory).

The Heaven's Feel route is due to be released in movie form in the near future.

Fate/Zero is a prequel series, set 10 years before Fate/Stay Night. It supposedly contains a number of spoilers for all three routes but I haven't seen it yet myself (I am waiting to see the Heavens Feel anime first).

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya is set in an alternate universe and is completely separate to the other stories. However it does use many of the characters who appear in the other Fate/Stay Night anime, so it may be useful to watch any of those first so you can appreciate the humour of them being placed out of context.

Unfortunately the only way to get a "spoiler free" run through this meta-series is to read/play the visual novel first as you then stumble across the secret backstories in the proper order. If you are going to skip the visual novel then any anime route will either include spoilers or miss out information that it is assumed you already know.

My suggested watching order would be:

Visual Novel
2006 series
Unlimited Blade Works series
Unlimited Blade Works film
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya
Heavens Feel
Fate/Zero

However many people will suggest different watching orders, which is why you have come across all the confusing and conflicting advice in previous threads.

I have seen the 2006 series of F/S Night, the UBW Series, and Fate Zero. I understand peoples feeling about NOT watching Fate Zero before the others, but IMHO I think it doesn't ruin anything. I actually started watching F/S Night then half way through started watching Fate Zero and recalled saying at the time, 'wish I started with Fate Zero.' Yes, you will 'spoil' who Saber is in the show for F/S Night, but it is not that hard to figure out after a while, and I think it adds towards your feeling of her knowing her backstory.

Anyway... just my two cents, the above suggestion is top notch suggestion too.

As far as I am aware it has never been officially translated into English, so the only legitimate way to access it would be to obtain a copy of the Japanese version and (if you can't read the language) download an unofficial patch that converts the visual novel into English.

I expect there are also non-legitimate ways to access it...

I think I'll do this order without the Visual novel, cause it's seems very complicated and long :/ .

Thanks everyone for your answers, it helps me a lot understanding all this chaos ahahah

Have a nice day

It was already mentioned, but thought I would point it out again, the "Heavens Feel" route has not been animated yet. I think there is plan to, but its certainly not out. So, if you are like one of the earlier contributors and want to watch in this order, you will be waiting some time before you can see Fate/Zero.

My 10 cents again. I would personally go with (if no VN)

1) Fate/Zero - yes spoliers, but who cares
2) Unlimited Blade Works series (UBW) - 10 years after Fate/Zero and has same flow

3) Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya - same timeline as UBW series, but just in some fantasy setting

4) 2006 series - it feels like watching number 2 above, but it has some differences so you can enjoy it, butt was made 9 years ago, so animation is not as good as UBW

5) Unlimited Blade Works film - I say skip if you watched #2
6) Heavens Feel - when it comes out, we will all watch it with you ; )

Again, not taking away earlier suggestions quality, so don't take it as a dig on someone.

So if I understand, some people are saying: watch in the order they came out, and others are saying: watch in the order of the timeline in the world of Fate. And each of them has their pros and cons :/

I still think i'll be patient and wait for the movie of heavens feel, anyway I have a lot of other anime to watch.

Thanks a lot again

Most normal people just watched Zero, then UBW. Watch the Deen one if you feel like it, I guess. Prisma Illya is magical girl/yuri, so, just in case that isn't your bag, you were warned going in.

Honestly, you don't need to listen to the YOU HAVE TO DO IT IN THE ORDER BLABLABLA ZOMG HARDXORE POWIEHROISLNDLFKAJ people. You'll be a lot happier if you don't. Also avoid all Fate anime subforums, for health purposes.

Yeah I guess in whichever order I listen to it, if I like it, it doesn't matter
