Post Reply You are given a button. Wehn you press it, you get one million dollars, but someone you know will die... What do you do?

I wouldn't press it on the off chance that it could be my sister, or someone whom she would become psychologically scarred from losing. I don't care about losing anyone other than her and who she is.

I could just secretly and anonymously enter into an agreement with a patient suffering from severe amnesia. They press the button enough times to make both of us obscenely rich, no one dies because they don't know who anyone is, and I collect my cut of money and the button immediately after they're done. All I have to do is never identify myself and they won't be able to kill me with the button, so I could actually sit there and watch them push the button the whole time.

I think you would die because even if he/she doesn't know anyone the patient does know you from the moment you make the deal with him he might just know you as the mysterious dealer but its enough to kill you. Some nurse or some doctor could die first but probably you would die too. Thats my opinion. Even if he never met you once just by contacting him triggers the effect. Maybe you tell someone else to contact him then he would die. Well i dunno.

If I really, really wanted to be careful there are more dramatic steps I could take, but then I wonder whether I actually need a human proxy at all. If a machine presses the button instead of a person the machine doesn't know anyone (because it's not alive) and so couldn't kill anyone. The rules don't say a person must press the button for its effect to arise, and they don't specify that if you set up a device to push the button for you this counts as your pressing the button.

We might be able to get away with using a lever mechanism or something. I pressed a different button, causing a machine to push the kill button. I never touched that one.

We must consult the Button Bible to determine the truth of the matter. Lives are at stake! Countless imaginary lives!

Tell a stranger and give to them.

But if you did that then technically the stranger would know you, so should he press the button you yourself could possibly die.
