Nicki Minaj comments on the VMAs choices for VOTY And Taylor Swift Takes It Personally
Posted 7/21/15 , edited 7/21/15
Btw, don't comment about how you don't care, or hate any of these celebrities, because what I'm trying to say here, isn't really about them. I'm sorta using them as a base(? not sure what to call it)

I know probably like 99% of people on here don't care about the mainstream celebrities and music, but what happened here I think brings up interesting topics I know most of you love hearing about: Racism and sizeism in the music/entertainment industry. Also selfish views of feminism. (Yay!)

This all happened on Twitter (specifically Nicki Minaj's)
Here are the tweets

And thats it.

Nicki always tweets things like this, but the reason why it's being talked about is Taylor's involvement of it.
I think the pictures some of the pictures are being used pretty much tells you what news outlets are saying about this. Like this one:

They're totally changing the situation by making Taylor seem like a victim or the white savior, and then Nicki just being a stereotypical angry black woman about the whole thing.
And this is pretty much what Nicki means when talking about racism in the media as well.

You'd think how Nicki Minaj's Anaconda video would get nominated, since it broke VEVOS record, also another successful video both she & Beyonce had done "Feeling Myself" would too, but neither of them had. And "Bad Blood" wasn't at all. It was blown out & lost all it's attention as soon as "Feeling Myself" came out like a day right after her video was released pretty much.
By the way, I am not a fan of Nicki Minaj's or Taylor Swifts music, but I think Nicki's videos should of gotten the reward, seeing how big of a hit it was (and still kinda is).

And about Taylor. She's a feminist, she said so herself.
But her idea/ways of going about it are kinda ehhhh...not good. I think you could tell by those tweets alone.
Her feminism, (as some would like to call "white feminism" I feel if you looked up about it, it will give a better explanation and more examples on it, assuming you never heard of that.) imo is selfish. Instead of siding getting/seeing what Nicki Minaj was talking about in those tweets (basically how black women, or women in general besides white women in the entertainment industry) never getting the credit they deserve, often being thrown under the bus, (basically literally what just happened to Nicki. She's getting the blame for Taylor taking her tweet personally.), or just being plain ignored, she decides to make this about herself, and use it as a personal attack.
The thing about feminism is that you can't go about it in just one way, especially if you really are supporting "all girls".
Every women of every race, faces sexism in different ways. And in my opinion, I think you gotta be be there for each of those women, individually, not all together, and not make it just about one of them/yourself.
Clearly, Taylor (a white women) is not apart of the issue of racism (and sizeism in her case) in the entertainment industry, which is why I think she saw it as a personal attack.

TL;DR
Feminists like Taylor shouldn't do this, and try to make things about themselves all the time.
Racism & sizeism is still a problem in the entertainment industry.

Anyways, what are you guys thoughts on this?

and again, don't comment about how you don't care, or hate any of these people.

I hope this thread doesn't go down the path of the other threads regarding feminism.

I don't care and I hate both of these people.

Nah, I actually like both of them, although I can't say I liked either badblood or anaconda. Badblood was really boring and anaconda felt... gimmicky.

In any case, people not seeing the bigger picture and making things about themselves all the time isn't exactly limited to feminists, it's just what people do. Just self centred celebs being self centred celebs.

I do not understand what nicki was trying to say in her tweets and I don't think she was talking about most of the things you said. Im very confused here so im just going to say that i wish there wasn't racism and the size issue in media. I dislike how much praise skinny women get and how women not size 0 get bullied alot and how white is power in media but if your black its going to take some time for you to get on top. Really, i wish one day everyone will look back on this and laugh at it. I can see it now, in the future we'll be judging people on their personality when we get to know them well ( or not judging at all for that matter!) I just hate that people will flame on others just because of their appearance.

"sizeism" ? man they have a label for everything now what's next? feetism? purseism? candleism? and while i'm no taylor swift fan, i doubt she's no more "making everything about herself" than any other celebrity out there (or human really), including this other girl (idk who this nicki chic is but i can guarantee she ain't no better nor worse than anyone else)

it's all just a big whine fest. social justice warriors cryin about everything. What do you even really stand for? Freedom from oppression? Equality? Well joke's on you, SJWs are no less oppressive, hateful, and unfair than the groups at which they point their fingers.

also racism is a problem everywhere in any industry. including (gasp!) outside of the USA

imagine that...

Not really sure what there is to discuss. Anaconda had a boring, typical video over a boring, typical Nikki Minaj song. Bad Blood had an over the top high production video over a horribly boring Taylor Swift song.

Nikki didn't get shafted for anything, and certainly nothing worth bringing racism into the picture. Her video was just not very interesting...

It's obvious that there was a misunderstanding between them and both were right and wrong in their own ways.

From what I got from Nicki tweets she's just salty about not being nominated for video of the year. Pretty sad she feels entitled to be automatically be in the finals. Typical hollywood behavior no need to make a mountain out of an anthill.

Any way for more reading on the subject
https://www.yahoo.com/music/nicki-minaj-puts-mtv-on-blast-for-2015-vma-124687771971.html

quote from article

Minaj also took issue with the fact that while “Anaconda” is up for “Best Hip Hop Video” and “Best Female Video,” it missed out on bigger categories like “Video of the Year.” The nominees for that honor include Swift, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars, and Kendrick Lamar.

To be fair, someone always seems to give Taylor Swift hell whenever she wins something. Remember Kanye? I can't really blame her for being sensitive about it..

As for Nicki Minaj's tweets, they really do come off as passive aggressive and entitled.

And literally everyone knows that.
Racism is a problem in general in the entire world. And I never said it only a problem here.
That's why I said "the entertainment industry" and not "America's entertainment industry"

I can barely understand what Nicki is saying in those tweets. I understand there's a character limit, but at least make it comprehensible.

I'm not going to get too into this though. Anaconda probably should've won it though, Bad Blood was a mouse in comparison. (Hah.)

Kanye just realizes when credit is really due to.
Hell, he one time when he won a reward for one of his songs, he insisted that that reward should of belonged to the person who actually deserved it, not him. (forgot who it was though)

Also Taylors reply wasn't?
