The official word on the apps that were discontinued were "low usage".

A shame. I just opened my tv to have Crunchyroll (one of my favorite apps) get deleted right in front of my eyes

I'v always preferred the Roku 3. It can be directly connected with an Ethernet cable and has an HDMI output, a headphone jack in the remote, and the newest release even has voice search, and the most possible "other" channels, since it isn't tied in with any one environment, like Apple or Amazon, etc.

There is a new Apple TV box coming out, but no one knows yet if it will work with the current CR app.

If you want to go the cheapest way, and you have a smartphone, I hear chromecast works, but I can't vouch for it one way or another.

If you are on Amazon, the Fire TV doesn't have an official app. The android app can be sideloaded with some pain, but I wouldn't really recommend that if CR, Funimation or TAN are what you want to watch. Hulu should work on that, though for a general solution. Fire TV has more powerful processors than the others.

If the Fire TV box would get a CR & Funi app , I'll buy one . Roku 3 does not support optical out , so no 5.1 for my surround setup . But Netflix does work & my Blu-ray has been doing quite a bit of freeze-ups & restarts lately . It is possible to stream CR thru the browser on my Samsung player , but the subtitles won't show up .

I just went to use the samsung CR app only to find it gone too. Reading through this thread is helpful. It was very convenient to have the app even in non-HD. I have tried to watch some via the internal web browser but its prone to crash when trying to stream (not unexpected considering the rendering requirements).

Unless you're using other things besides Crunchyroll, that's a waste of money considering anime networks aren't even broadcasting in 4k and possibly won't be for quite some time.

Ah, I meant to reply to the other guy who mentioned having a 4K tv, and that the Roku 4 is the device that supports 4K, and not the 3. It's only a few extra bucks apart from the 3. If you have a 4K tv, might as well get that.
