Cicadas. Their shells... not the live ones.

In my high school, there was this area with lots of trees, and those creepy shells... I get so scared of it... it's like, "What if it moves"... the thing just hanged on to a branch... it kind of reminds me of Cell from Dragonball.

The boys used to collect those things to scare me... I get freaked out... in the middle of class... it's just seriously creepy.

Praying mantis. IT'S UGLY and looks like something from alien movies.

Stick insects... they camouflage too well with the environment... i thought i was looking at a stick... then it moves.... INSECTS ARE DISGUSTING AND SCARY.

Flying cockroaches. The first time i saw a flying cockroach.... I nearly faint.

Giant flies. Why do these still exist?

Although I love to handle insects and have had a lifetime of experience, there are still a few that I won't handle. This is coming from a guy who has handled animals like scorpions and rattlesnakes. The hymenopterans are the most intimidating and aggressive. I'm not very scared of bees, but certain wasp and ant species can be very aggressive. Bulldog ants, Asian giant hornets, fire ants, etc. A lot of insects are much bigger but the hymenopterans have a unique combination of aggression, speed, venom, and numbers. They bite AND sting. Repeatedly. Some also chase you.

They aren't the most dangerous, but they are the most scary in the conventional sense. The really dangerous ones are parasites or parasitoids, and insects that spread disease.

They seem to be much more aware and alert than most other insects. They can differentiate between your flesh and the ground due to their sense of smell (particularly the ants). I can let animals like tiger beetles, black widows, and centipedes walk over my arm since they don't know the difference as long as I don't squeeze them, but many species of ants will actually stop and bite.

This topic makes me sad. I think mantids are very cute. The way they look around and seem almost contemplative. I keep them as pets whenever I can find them. Too bad they don't live much longer than a year at most. I also like jumping spiders and any large orb weaver or funnel web weaver. I like to look at webs and throw bugs into them to watch the spiders feed.

That does look scary. Hope it doesn't raid into my house.

Japanese giant hornets. I don't like wasps/hornets in general, but I especially don't like them when they're that big. While I was in Japan, there were several occasions where I came home to a giant hornet sitting on the doorknob. I usually waited across the street for it to leave.

Don't know the official name but these ants are the most annoying things you could deal with. For me they are the scariest since I can't imagine waking up one night to find them crawling all over the bed.

I'm going to go with the Asian giant hornet now. I found a nest when I was in Japan and the hornets were very feisty and alert. I managed to escape and also had the chance to observe them feeding on other insects. They are very cool but also scary and dangerous. I haven't encountered any insects as aggressive as those hornets.
