Kyoko and Godai from Maison Ikkoku. They had every aspect of chemistry down pat. Friendship, companionship, crush, affection and romance. And they had the development both of character and relationship over several years through ups and downs to accompany it.

But not nearly as much as Lum & Ataru from Urusei Yatsura, by the time Kazuo Yamazaki was directing the series--
The "chase" became more of a one-upmanship game of outwitting each other, now that they knew each other's strategies down pat, and the episodes were more about Ataru discovering he was a nice guy who liked her after all, no matter what reputation he tried to keep up.

Lesser known is the "comedy duo" of Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Ootani from Lovely Complex, two born Osakan wiseasses so determined not to admit they're perfect for each other, they keep trying to set each other up for dates, and just end up closer together.
Couldn't split this duo up with a chisel.

The problem with Lum and Ataru from Urusei Yatsura is that not only did Rumiko NOT want them to end up together (she only gave in because Lum was so outrageously popular)...but Ataru never got any character development. He started off the series as an idiotic pervert and ended the series as an idiotic pervert. And Lum just remained this outrageously attractive alien girl who obsessed over a loser guy. It was just wish-fullfilment with shallow characterization. On the other hand, there was no realism to the series - it was just pure, humorous crack.

...Unlike Maison Ikkoku which, to this day, has one of the most realistic romances and also delves into realworld problems with humor and compassion - the struggles of college, entering the real world, struggling to find a job and keep a job, growing up and having people rely on you, moving beyond the death of your beloved spouse...I suppose that is why even in recent polls, Maison Ikkoku still tops the romance series, even against new romance series time and time again.

Lum is the cultural phenomenon girl...Maison Ikkoku the series that has stood the test of time.

Your mention of Lovely Complex, I didn't watch the anime but read the entire manga. They're a cute couple, I'll give them that. It was a refreshing take on the Shoujo genre, though by the end of the manga, I felt that Risa had lost a bit of her unique spark and fell somewhat into a "typical Shoujo-girl" cliche. Still, I like the series and the couple...

I agree with the previous Gintoki and Tsukuyo post.

Although I want to go with the Sawako and Shota combo from Kimi ni Todoke.

Aoyagi and Teshima from Yowamushi Pedal. I love how Teshima understood Aoyagi when he barely talked.

Araragi and Hitagi from Bakemonogatari. Seriously, their interactions from the first three arcs were absolutely amazing. If you guys haven't watched that anime yet I HIGHLY suggest it. I mean, i've watched a hell of a lot of anime and I can rewatch it at any point and be happy with it.
