We always say hi, bye, good morning, thank you to people we might be acquainted with but not yet know. After spending some more time with them you might start a conversation.

What are some bad first conversations you have had with someone?
did the topic they bring up tell something about how they viewed you?

It can either just keep to a casual conversation, or it gets a little "naughty" on my first conversations.

Just recently I made a friend. Of course it was the usual conversation, we discovered our shared interest in anime. He asked me if I've watched Monster Musune. I said no, he said "I bet you think you're talking to so weird pervert or something, mentioning lewd anime like that". I replied "Nono it's fine, I watch lots of hentai anyways".

After that point we became good friends.

Usually as you put it greetings, how are you. , good, you?, etc may seem shallow but being polite goes a long way,

" to get respect you must first give it

I always start off with a good greeting then depending if the person is a lot older than me like my mother or her friends I might say Hot enough for you or I will offer to do an errand for them like go to mail box. A good topic is price of produce at market older people have quite a bit to say on that topic. If the person is younger I ask genuinely how is school and studies then lead into local sports and go from there.

I avoid new people until they talk to me first, and they generally don't.

Conversing with people has never been a problem for me, i'm a natural talker just like my mother. I'm usually not the one to initiate a conversation, but i can talk with just about anyone about just about anything.

The one thing that has never worked in my favor, however, is music. Most everyone that i've tried to talk to about music has been passionate about one particular genre or artist and when they start to go on and on about them i end up trapping myself in a conversation talking about something or someone that i don't know anything about. For instance, the other day i was talking to my cousins friend and he listens to a lot of EDM (too much if you ask me) and he just went on and on about artists that i've never heard of and gave me looks when i didn't recognize a name or a song. Now, I've got my own taste in music that's strange in its own way, people that hardly anyone has ever heard of and music that just sounds strange. I don't try to be uptight about it, but i don't want to force anyone to hear music that doesn't interest them, my musical preferences are probably one of the last things that my friends learn about me.

From experience, music just isn't a good conversation starter unless you meet someone at a concert. I usually start with something that i personally don't have a strong opinion on and just go from a simple starting point.

Or you could always talk about the weather

Be yourself. Or if that fails just copy the coolest guy in the room.

Well if you're anyone else you start with any normal introduction.

If you're me, you don't. You avoid it at all costs.

I usually just say Hi.. and if the person doesn't continue the conversation, I just leave it as that.

But sometimes... when I've been wanting to talk to the person, I do my "research" on them first and then bring what I find as a conversation starter lol. Might sound creepy but oh well.

When meeting someone new, I normally strike up a conversation about something going on around us (waiting for the bus, waiting in line at the store, etc.). Then I normally attempt to make them laugh or tell them an interesting fact about myself and if they continue wanting to speak to me, then cool...If not, then that's cool too.
