There are some questions which pop immediately to my mind:

1. Are we talking about writing a character, or looking for one in an existing visual novel?
2. Is there a particular genre, setting, or theme we're after?
3. Are we exclusively talking about clean visual novels, or are we also talking about eroge?

Edit: I spotted your other thread, so forget question one.

Well, let's see. The first thing to keep in mind about visual novels' main characters is that generally they're supposed to serve as self-inserts for the player. That means you generally want to develop their character primarily along whatever course the player wants, and so unlike the others they won't actually have a single personality. They might be a kindly, respectful person along one route and a horrible, deceptive person along another, with the player in the driver's seat to decide which they want to see play out.

Well, I've given something along the lines of what I'd like to see with my example (the Girl Friends manga) in the other thread, so Mari is a good place to start for an MC that I would personally enjoy. She's shy, bookish, and a bit socially awkward, but over time starts to come out of her shell and discovers that she's experiencing romantic feelings for her new best friend (who is a girl). She's fairly down to earth as main characters go: she enjoys visiting stores for window shopping, hanging around at her friends' apartments, learns all kinds of things about her friends' interests (everything from fashions/makeup to karaoke, cocktails made from liquor swiped from the cabinet, and manga), and is just generally like someone you'd know.

Let's flesh out a short scenario with Mari to show you what that might look like (as well as give you an idea of how you might format a script for this puppy):

Yes, Mari would be a high school student. Of course, I'm not averse to other age groups, but that seems to be the prevailing trend. I wouldn't mind either way.

I suppose you could make that a branch in this hypothetical fan game I'm describing, but in the story she just shares one glass with Akko as a way to get closer to her. In the scenario described above the two paths would have her either following the story as it actually goes (drinking one glass and getting a little tipsy) or not drinking at all. You could add more branches depending upon what decision was made there.

For example, after she drinks a glass of what amounts to a White Russian minus the vodka (for shame) she kisses Akko. You could put another branch in there for the player to decide whether she actually does that or not. Choosing to do so could take the player down the yuri route, and choosing not to do so could be a neutral option which doesn't add or subtract any points.

So then you'd have three variants of Mari for the player to choose from:

1. A more adventurous one which drinks and then yields to her desire to kiss Akko (canon)
2. A middle way one who tries the drink, but isn't ready to deal with her feelings for Akko
3. A more strict one who isn't ready to deal with either (or may not have feelings for Akko at all and wants someone else)

Me? I'd want to play Mari (1) or (2). But that's what I mean by the sort of MC I'd like to play: a down to Earth yuri heroine to whom I could easily relate and who faced and responded to ordinary circumstances in relatable ways. Nothing fantastic like elves or orcs, nothing terrifying like a horror story, and nothing as deep as a mystery. Just life. There's not enough yuri out there that just shows life, or if there is I haven't seen it yet.

This...
I'm go for a relateable character! That has it's ups and downs.

You can have a main that's not in highschool... I played Hakuisei Renai Shoukougun, and they're pretty much working class nurses. So a working class or college student main is also cool, I mean, you can explore more options with them as well.

Well, it's a not a VN but, At one point, I also do like cool, mature, and empowering female leads like Lightning (FFXIII) & Milla (Tales of Xillia) but with this archetype, I want to see how they became these strong and confident women, what suffering they had gone through and that they are also a simple person like everybody else, with normal problems, insecurities and doubts. Maybe kinda like Lara Croft in the New Tomb Raider series... Well, you can add this if not a lead but a love interest to either for a Yuri game or the non-yuri games... Anyways, that's just me...
