A spin-off of Triangle Heart franchise (more exactly from the hentai game Triangle Heart 3 and it's respective OVA "Sweet Songs Forever"), Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha is a very interesting anime that tries to make a particular bond between the "magical girl" and "shounen" concepts. Of course seeing those two concepts mixed togheter and the fact that Triangle Heart is a hentai game, expect lots of action, a touching story and ECCHI (in caps, in case someone doesn't want this in his animes)

The story revolves arround Nanoha, your average 9 year old 3rd grader, who although living with a caring family feels that something in her live is missing, something that only she can do. On her way to cram school she suddenly hears a voice echoing on her head, calling for help. Going to the rescue, Nanoha finds herself with a little injured ferret carring a red orb arround his neck. But that ferret is in fact Yuuno Scrya, a mage that came from another world to recover the Jewel Seeds, powerful yet unstable magical artifacts that could become very dangerous if their power is released. However Yunno is too injured to finish the task alone, he asks for Nanoha's help, as she is the only one who could hear his request, and gives her the magical cristal Raising Heart (wich later Nanoha molds into a staff) to unlock her latent magical power. But the quest won't be easy as Nanoha will have to battle for the Jewel Seeds against Fate Testarosa, a girl with huge power and sad eyes.

The anime has several mahou shoujo elements such as the collection of certain element, a cute little pet following the heroine arround and a tranformation scene (in wich, of course, she strips naked before getting her suit) but the diferences with the other animes of the genre are quite noticeable: Nanoha is not the stereotipical magical girl in both her resolve (she's quite fearless of an enemy that could kill her) and skills (this last item actually matches animes like Dragon Ball) and the collection of the Jewel Seeds is more of an excuse for the actual plot.

Talking about the plot, I'm sure most of us could imagine the last scene of this anime by only watching the opening, but the really interesting part about this anime is the development. Since the anime is only 13 episodes long all the action comes straight at you, no fillers, every scene will have something to do with the development of events later on.

The visual aspect of the anime could be better (in fact it gets better in the following seasons) as some scenes like closeups or character appearances seem like experimental animation, and of course the person who came up with the animation for the ending must die in a painful way. But those are just minor scenes, all the action packed spellcasting will surelly put a smile in your face.

The Sound is just perfect. The device's voice gives a little extra to the anime and Innocent Starter, the opening by Nana Mizuki, is the Supreme God. Also it's fun to hear how the characters mispronounce some of the english names (FEITO-CHAN!!!).

It's a shame that it seems not that popular between us occidental folks, cause this is a pretty cool anime that deserves to be watched.

I enjoyed the series especially the 3rd season and its pretty amazing how much they fit into those 13 episodes. I really liked how they developed the charachters especially Fate and her relationship with her mom.

I agree with everything Blopa said >_< At first,I thought this would be the typical shoujo anime with pretty girls waving their wands around chanting stuff and it really exceeded my expectations. One of the best part was the sound though..Mizuki Nana really did a good job as Fate's seiyuu and the opening songs were really great xD

What I think makes this anime unique is that there isn't bad guys, except jail and fate's mom (I feel that jail is the only true bad guy :x). In the 1st series, fate (!!!!) seems to be a bad guy, but as the story unfolds, it then seems that fate's mom is the bad guy, and in the end, fate ends up as nanoha's allies. In series 2, the belka knight's (programmes of the book of darkness) seemed to be the evil doers by trashing nanoha in the 1st episode X(, but nearing the end of season 2(A's) , or rather at season 3 (striker S), they bacame allies. Also, in striker S, the robots(most of them anyway), in the end, stood down and, if i didnt remember wrongly, volunteered to do community service.

Another thing that makes this series nice is the magical devices each of them carry. They are portable devices which can be set up to from battle weapons. I just love the sound (voice) of the devices when they are in combat.

One more thing which is memorable is that how they linked series 1 and with striker S. Although not much was developed about fate's creation (that's why she's perfect :x), they tied fate up with jail (as in jail is fate's father)as he assisted fate's mother to create fate, which is a replica of her dead daughter.

Things i hate about the anime:
Chrono, Erio (male characters) <-- pure jealousy

You forgot Yuuno, our favourite ferret, who saw Nanoha naked and it's still alive.

I just have to say that its one of the best animes ive seen, though in the first season started off a little rocky, but u gradually get a deeper impact for the characters, the second season was amazing, it started out with an amazing first episode and the return of fate XD, and as it went on the story developed and the end which ended very well, and the 3rd season was slower than the second, but with new characters and weapons it was worth it to see the character develpoment

The most mention worthy feature in Nanoha was the utilization of English-speaking weapons, and it was actually interesting then. I saw something similar for Gear Fighter Dendoh, but that was for their launching catapult and wasn't as interesting.

P.S. Half-way through any part of each of the 3 seasons, I almost felt that Fate was gay, and I don't know why...
