UPDATE: I've since come to the realization that this isn't a problem with individuals, it's a problem with the functionality of the group system. I've decided to forego it as a result.

Have you ever tried to report it to a mod?

Also, I agree with the post below.

wouldnt it make more sense to post this concern in the groups that are sending you the mass pms? ijs, do you think they are going to leave their group to see you post about this here? not sure what you are trying to accomplish here...

i guess if you are trying to vent it out would make sense but to find a solution for it, posting it here doesnt seem to be helping your case, sorry to be blunt about it

My thing is listen to this
"Oh man i'm in the pumpkin eater fan group, yay i get to talk about pumpkin stuff with like minded people."
*3 weeks later
"Oh man why do these people that share my interest keep sending me topics and discussions about the things that i like? this is really grinding my gears grrrrr"

I feel like it's much easier for the mods of whatever group your're in to just hit the send all button than to remember to uncheck only your name when they send out they're messages.

As a group creator (but not one you are in), I can tell you that there is no option for us to exclude individuals when sending a message to the group, other than to remove you from it entirely. Part of being in a group is accepting the fact that group emails get sent when the creator deems it necessary to provide updates. In essence you are saying you think that no one in the group should get any updates about it, ever.

I do think this is a shortcoming in the group functionality programming to not have an option for exclusion like that, but it is what it is, and personally I think hell will freeze over before CR would change it.

Fortunately, you can eliminate the PMs yourself if you don't want to see them. Simply block the group creator by adding their username to the PM block list in your profile here:

/acct/?action=inbox

Problem solved, you can stay in the group, and you no longer get any PMs from that person. Everyone else, who do apparently still want them, can still get them, or choose for themselves whether to block them also.

I've never had this issue but you should speak with the mods about this instead of ranting about it here since it's irrelevant.

From the time I've spent trying to get a little bit of traffic to my group I've come to realize that corner of the website has some of the most OCD people I've ever seen. There's one group in particular that spam bumps themselves literally every 20 minutes, 24 hour a day, 7 days a week. And a few others that are nearly that bad.

So I'm really not all that shocked that some of them are flooding their members with messages as well.

Please keep in mind that spamming may result punishable consequences.

Why haven't you contact any of the mods? I'm sure they will use the ban hammer to stop these mass private messages.

Actually, it goes deeper than that; it is a general overall forum missing functionality. There is no "native" way to subscribe to entire forums or even individual threads (whether in a group or not), so, as you point out, you don't/can't get notifications when people make new posts anywhere, and you have to go looking yourself.

For people who want something like live interaction, such as with a chatbox or thread update notification, that puts a big damper on things, because all they have to communicate actively is by sending PMs to generate notifications, especially for something like groups, which as you say are basically something "hidden away".

There is some relief in an unofficial extension that one of the mods created for Chrome which ironically has it's own group, that is pretty well tolerated right now. However, I suspect that if too many people start using it, the traffic would increase almost exponentially here, which is why, I suppose, that there is no official functionality like that integrated with the forum coding; they would have to invest in more powerful hardware to handle it, and the focus here does seem to be gradually shifting to just being a streaming service, and over time has lessened in the area of being a social site.
