Hello hello all! I consider myself to be very deep in artistic thought, spiritual unison, and logical decisions. I am currently a ENVS (Environmental studies)/Philosophy major with some experience in Biochemistry!

Anyways, i really enjoy philosophical, mind bendy, trippy Anime that has very deep meaning behind it. Some of my favorites have been Parasyte the maxim that has HUGE philosophical element of the relationship and values of organisms on planet earth, and madoka magica which represents the value of soul compared to body and vice versa, defining their unison as ultimate or two birds of a feather.

If anyone has any cool anime to recommend, give me a shout on this thread! (If its a little inappropriate go a head and PM me)

Also I'm kinda new so I'm looking for new buddy's. If your a hippie who's into jam music definitely add me! if you like downtempo electronic definitely add me! But also, anyone that would like to just chat around and discuss anime/spirituality/philosophy/ chemistry/ and psychoactive substances definitely add me (:

-Thanks for your time

Anything by Satoshi Kon is very psychological: Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent, Paprika, Millennium Actress. Ghost in the Shell gets very philosophical, some iterations more than others, as does Ergo Proxy.

On CR:
/time-of-eve
/shin-sekai-yori
/bakemonogatari
/kill-la-kill

Bakemonogatari certainly fits the bill, as eyeofpain suggested. It's all about dealing with our inner-demons. Others:

Serial Experiments Lain is the most head-trippy anime I've ever seen, hands down, in a "question your reality" sort of way.

The Eccentric Family has a lot of interesting things to say about mourning an important family member--and what that says about the meaning of family.

Natsuyuki Rendezvous is all about moving on after the death of a loved one.

Nagi no Asukara has a lot to say about the tensions between community need and personal desires (the good of the many vs. the good of the few, so to say), as well as tradition vs. change.

Aside from the current recommendations:

Ergo Proxy -- there's a lot of direct reference to classical philosophy and philosophers in this show. You'll find that on Funi.

Psycho-Pass -- explores the relation of crime prevention and society through technology. It's similar to PKD's Minority Report. You'll also find that on Funi.

There are some others, but that's it off the top of my head.

Yuri Kuma Arashi (if you don't mind Yuri, it's pretty much a symbolic take on Class S relationships in Japan)
Tokyo ESP (while it seems to be a superhero show, you can't help but wonder who the real villains are)
Terror in Resonance (another case of who are the heroes and who are the villains)
Paranoia Agent (too hard to explain with just a few words though the words rehabilitation and punishment fit in there some how)

Thanks for the info! much appreciated. I started watching Bakemonogotari a while a go and watched the first 4 episodes or so and really enjoyed it. i ended up getting caught in school and forgot about the series haha. however when i started the series up again today i noticed the quality was very very low. When i was watching it a few months ago the quality was HD but now when i watch it on CR the quality is extremely blurry and only runs in 480p, which actually looks like 280p. Any suggestions or reasons for this?

In the mean while ill check out the other ones you suggested (:

It would appear that Aniplex only allowed CR to have the 480p version of Bakemonogatari here for whatever undisclosed reason. I too, would like to see a better resolution available, especially considering the rest of the monogatari series here have that available.

I feel like Full Metal Alchemist would also fit the bill here overall. I'm not sure where you can catch it, but it is a pretty good series.

Check out Texhonolyze. Good anime about the nature of humanity and evolution. Good action too, but it's super dark. Probably the most depressing story ever told, anime or not.

I will second Serial Experiments Lain. Doesn't get much trippier than Lain.

Also Boogiepop Phantom. Another really trippy sci-fi anime. Kind of hard to follow though, it's not linear.

Couple others if you are gong stretch on the whole "relationship and values of organisms on planet earth" though some might disagree

- Eureka Seven: pretty much satisfied the relationship and values of org on planet earth condition
- Princess Mononoke: its a movie and not a series, but it has the interaction of organisms and planet in spades
- Angel Beats: yeah, I get people might call it a comedy or too much humor, but anyone that says they didn't shed a tear in couple episodes is a liar, plus the whole existence afterlife is plenty philosophical for me
- Kokoror Connect: again, sort of like Angel beats in there is plenty of humor, but there is more serious side then humor, and the twists it takes in determining what is a person, their soul or the body it inhabits can be interesting

Plenty of others, but then its just piling on to the 20 other anime that have been recommended. Enjoy and good luck withy your studies!

I have a few suggestions. Some of them might seem a little too obvious, but I don't know what you've seen, sorry.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Deconstruction of the Mecha genre. One of the most highly acclaimed anime series of all time.

The story behind this one is interesting: this series was created at a time when its director and creator, Hideaki Anno, was suffering from severe depression. The three main characters all represent different portions of himself, and the whole show is basically Anno's public therapy session. As a result, this is one of the most personal TV series of all time.

Also recommend the movie, End of Evangelion, which is extremely surreal.

Gunbuster
First series directed by Hideaki Anno, the director/creator of Evangelion, and pretty similar. Basically a predecessor to Evangelion. Not as philosophical as Evangelion, but still a very good series. Only 6 episodes long. Deals with the repurcussions of time dilation caused by near-lightspeed space travel.

Welcome to the NHK
The story of a "hikikomori" (shut-in) and the people who try to save him. Very depressing at times, but a good analysis of the darker side of the Otaku lifestyle.
