Taking offense to humor. Stupid or right?
Posted 7/31/15 , edited 7/31/15
I tried out for my talent show in grammar school. Me and a friend did a comedy routine, and I made an anorexia joke, and we didn't get in because I was too offensive.

It was then I realized how humor differs from person to person.

Yesterday, I made a joke somewhere and a lot of people got offended. (If you want know the joke I'll have to PM it because it'll get me banned if I write it here )

I understand some things may not be funny to some people, but...a joke is a joke. That's all. I've had jokes hurled at me before, and you just hurl one back. That's how it works. But taking offense to humor is different than taking offense to someone personally insulting you, which I think we all can agree isn't exactly right to do.

There's also a time and a place for jokes. That's the secret.

So, I'm bringing this up so the next time someone makes a joke about something you do, are, or believe in so you remember that a joke is not an insult. It's just a joke.

That said, have you had a similar experience as me? Or have you ever been offended by a joke?

Of course you didn't get in, you just made fun of people with eating disorders and mental illness.

You made a joke that was not funny.

stupid.

Unless its intentionally malicious and a personal attack on someone (actually making fun of a specific person and not making fun of something that happens to apply to many people) then get the fuck over yourselves and stop being a special snowflake.

People these days get offended by everything. You could make a skit about someone with 22 nipples and someone somewhere in the world is going to get offended by it.

I think people have the right to get offended at a joke, but you also have the right to make an offensive joke. The idea of silencing that which offends you is what I find stupid. That isn't to say that getting offended can never be stupid, as there is a line where you cross over from rightfully or understandably offended, to just being ridiculous.

In many cases humor is just masked bigotry or prejudice. A person won't make a joke they either don't believe in or find truth in. Gay jokes, ugly jokes, fat jokes, mentally handicapped jokes, Jewish jokes, Polish jokes...masked racism/sexism is all it is. It's just like those people that insult you and right before getting a punch in the face say "only kidding!". Insult comedy is one of the lowest forms of comedy out there (right behind toilet humor), there are plenty of funny comedians and comediennes out there who don't rely on that kind of comedy to make a living.

i don't think you should be trying to dictate what is offensive and what isn't. if someone is offended by a "joke" there's clearly a reason behind it and trying to justify things by saying "oh a joke is a joke" makes you an insensitive asshole. honestly it really isn't your place to tell someone what they should and shouldn't be offended by. just because you're "easygoing" doesn't mean the rest of the world has to be that way, boi

Shoot, that right there made me laugh.

You just have to know your audience. It's about the relationship between the one making the jokes and the recipient. Me, I don't take offense to much of anything when I know people are joking. If we're friends like that, we can say whatever the hell we want to say to each other. If I'm not sure if you're joking or not because we're not tight like that, we might have a problem.

Well you can't expect everyone to feel the same toward something aren't you? everyone has different beliefs, thoughts, etc which mean that anyone can get offend the depending of the time of content or joke that you trying to displayed toward them. Overall I have personality think that you have rights or complain to tell someone whether they should or shouldn't get offend .

It's fine to take offense at something. It's not fine to call for censorship because you are offended.
Posted 7/31/15

You really just don't like me do you? What exactly have I personally done so wrong you feel warranted to call me an

insensitive asshole

Like seriously I am easygoing usually, but chill the fuck out. You take this Captain Crusader BS a little too serious and you stalk out my posts waiting for me to say something that might make you angry.

I'm not telling anyone anything, hence the question mark in the title. Also, your avatar is Lana Del Rey as Virgin Mary. Surely that offends no one, right?

II'm not here to offend people, I don't even care. If someone feels a joke is offensive that's their right, but chances are they are overreacting to something that should only be a joke.
