So, even if you haven't watched them, most people know that when it comes to sad anime that make people cry, a few immediately come to mind. A few being Angel Beats, Anohana, and Clannad (main story or after story). I was wondering if there were more anime like this that made people cry. I usually only ever see these 3 mentioned and sometimes I like my sob story anime so I was wondering if others had some insight to this.

Just list a few anime in your replies. If you want, you can say how sad it was on a scale from 1-10 (1 being "i didn't cry", 5 being "i teared up a little", and 10 being "i literally couldn't stop crying and just thinking about the series makes me sad)

THANK YOU!

What a roundabout way to ask for tragic anime.

You are putting it up to Air.

Magi's second season. The magnostadt arc can get pretty heavy in certain points, the first time I watched it I cried twice and the second time I watched it I cried once (I'm someone who gets really invested in stuff though so results may vary)

While the anime itself is not underrated, the sad parts of it are; Gintama. It can take you from laughing your ass off one minute, to breaking down in tears the next.

Yeah, Shinsekai Yori was my go-to after reading this. I'd definitely recommend it, but I wouldn't put it in the same category as Anohana/Clannad/Angel Beats. It's a lot more thought provoking and artistic, so it might not be exactly what you're looking for.

I'd also say Nagi no Asukara - the first half might not seem that sad, but it's setting you up for a devastating series of events in the later half of the show.

And, of course, the more recent Your Lie in April (Shigatsu). Probably the hardest I've ever cried about anything.

If you're willing to go past more realistic slice of life tragedies like Anohana and Clannad, I'd also recommend checking out stuff like Zankyou no Terror ;3; The ending is horrifically depressing.

I will never understand why this moeblob bullcrap anime is considered "good" with its outrageous overacting, submissive girls with the personalities of 4 year olds, loli undertones...ugh. All those Key animes are just the most unrealistic, cliche and ridiculous things ever.

Anyway...

Grave of the Fireflies (two children trying to make it in WW2 Japan - shows the graphic horrors of war).

Now and Then, Here and There (A little boy is accidentally taken to a an unknown, dystopian world after trying to save a girl. An extremely heartbreaking and thought provoking series featuring war, child soldiers, rape, forced prostitution of children, torture, human misery, the cost of war, the psychological torment of war...regardless of the "childishness" of the animation/art style, this is a dark, harsh series).

Saikano (A young man must deal with his girlfriend's fading humanity after her body becomes a literal weapon of mass destruction and slowly causes the annihilation of the earth, against her wishes. Painfully sad).

Millennium Actress (An extremely smart, innovative anime movie where an elderly former actress recounts her life and her eternal chase for a mysterious man in a way that reality and cinema become blurred).

Hotarubi no Mori e -Into the Forest of Fireflies- (Just 45 minutes long, but very touching especially if you like fairytales and romance. A girl recalls her relationship with a mysterious boy she meets every summer over a span of some years...however, even as she falls in love, nothing can be done for the boy will vanish if ever a human touches him).

These are the ones that come to mind. Of course, there are plenty of sad anime (especially older series) and manga out there.
