So, I have a problem. I like romance anime, but I also have pretty high standards nowadays in that regard. Maybe Toradora spoiled me on that score, I don't know. I find myself unable to find any truly good, serious romance anime nowadays. It all seems like it's been done before, and better.

I'd heard good things on this front about Your Lie in April, so, a few weeks ago, I decided to try it. The first two episodes were very promising and I enjoyed them a lot. Episode 3, on the other hand, was boring and completely uneventful. Episode 4 was the breaking point, as it was some of the most excruciating melodrama I've ever sat through, and the symbolism was both trite and ham-handed. I dropped it at this point. However, I find myself in the same predicament, and somewhat interested to try it again. I just want to know, as honestly as possible, is episode 4 just a really bad episode of it? Or is that about par for the course, and that's just the kind of show it is? No spoilers, either, please.

No jimmies are intended to be rustled with this, I am quite honestly and innocently asking. Thank you for your consideration.

No. It's boring. And way too overrated.

If you want romance, go watch something else, this will disappoint you.

If you want drama, then this is for you.

For a good romance, I'd say Clannad, Alison and Lillia (Not Yuri, Lillia is Alison's daughter), Natsuyuki Rendezvous, Romeo x Juliet ... that is all I have off the top of my head.

It's not a romance really. It's more of a drama.

If you're looking for a truly good serious romance anime, i wouldn't recommend YLIA.

To me the story was more of a "growing up" tale rather than your typical romance anime. The story is largely focused on Arima coming to terms with his mother's death and finding a reason to play again. The later half of the story explores more of the romance but it is more between the lines and never goes full on. I prefer that way considering they are only about 14 years old and if it had went full on I would have found it less believable. There's a child-like innocence that comes with the romance of "Your Lie in April" that you will either appreciate or you will hate it. Whether you should continue watching it is hard to say as from your reaction it doesn't seem like it's your kind of thing but as a fan I'd encourage you to give it a few more eps.

I could only get through 8 episodes before dropping it. Sooooo much melodrama and the "comedy" was cringe-inducing to the point where I couldnt even handle it anymore. "Yes lets constantly beat up this kid with a history of physical abuse for comedic effect." Hilarious. Ugh.

Even as a fan of the show I couldn't stand the comedy elements. Besides the abuse comedy style being overly used it was also just pure cringy and badly timed.

You know what's funny, that there are a lot of American movies that follow almost the exact same pattern as YLIA.

I would say that if you were turned off by episode 4 that you won't make it through the series. I wouldn't bother.

It's like they couldn't figure out how to work some comic relief into the dialogue so instead they replaced punchlines with literal punches. I mean, KyoAni, JC Staff, and PA Works all know how to make an anime serious but still keep it lighthearted at times without making the transitions awkward. A1 Pictures, what the hell have you been smoking lately?

Wow, thanks for the very mature responses guys! No sarcasm or offense at all intended, I am actually a little (but pleasantly) surprised. I guess it's not for me, then. Thanks a ton!
