At one time there was a small sign on his desk, "The buck stops here".

Congress is very good at blame sharing and shifting.

I can tell this thread is owned by liberal opinions, so I won't bother.

Another good point; the whole country is almost cleanly divided between two fanatical sects that spend more time trying to tear the other down with steeper and steeper radicalism than coming up with sensible policies. Because the president is the most visible figure of one of the two religions "parties", he (or she, potentially) is in prime firing range for the entire rival group. And if there's one thing politicians are decent at, it's getting lots of people to dislike something more than them.

On another interesting note, Congress was designed to be slow and unwieldy. The Founders didn't want a government that could move faster than people could keep track of, especially in a world where news traveled by letter. Of course, they're being a bit ridiculous with their pace now, but it's not something that should be fixed "too much".

And at ignoring single-digit approval ratings.

There are times when I wish we had the ability to call a vote of no confidence, like the parliamentary governments do.

They do that in many other countries as well. Blaming the leader is an easy thing to do, so people do it.

I blame congress before anything else, they are typically the more destructive and disruptive force in politics. Their abysmal approval rating shows that most people understand this (compared with Obama's much more average rating).

But the president is the face of the government. Part of his job is making the government's case to the people, representing the entire country's interests in government, and setting the overall agenda. That means he's also often the first to get flak when things go bad. It's not always fair, but I can't really say I feel bad for him either. He had to know that's what he was signing up for.

Because He is the figurehead, it's their job to take the blame basically... They are the face we know. But, most bills barely manage to pass through congress, if The POTUS vetoes a bill there is little chance of getting it through congress in today's bureaucratic political shit hole called congress a second time

Okay, this is a question I've been wondering for a long time. Anyone with a 3rd grade education in the United States knows that the President doesn't make laws or decides that the country should go to war. These are things done by Congress. The President has the power to veto a bill, but if it gets overruled, that's because Congress overruled it.

So when controversial events occur in the USA why do people automatically blame the president? He's only a figurehead of the country, with little power compared to Congress. People saying "Obama is the worst president" or "Bush is the worst president", why do you say that? Even if you didn't vote for that particular president, how is that president the worst? What did they do? Why don't you blame Congress?

I get some of it is satirical (like the "Thanks Obama" or "Bush did 9/11"), but when people genuinely say it, I wonder why.
Does anyone have an answer?

Ok, but when Bush was President and went full on "we need to go to war with TERROR XD" and gung-ho'd into Iraq. It was literally Bush's administration (see? I'm not blaming just Bush) who tried to convince Congress. I mean, it was literally his decision to go to war...

Osama is... in Afghanistan
Bush wanted.... to invade Iraq

Idk -_-.

For this I blame that ex POTUS.
