Why do people often take things way too personally?
Posted 8/2/15 , edited 8/2/15
Its something I see a lot on the internet mostly.

I just don't see why people get so worked up over it too. Its gone to the point where people will get so offended & defensive over the littlest things/general opinion.

Me: Kill la Kill ain't that deep.
Guy comes out from under my bed in full Ryuko Matoi cosplay: Look see, I'm offended by this, because KLK actually has superior storyteling for an anime only intellectuals like myself would understand since it actually gives a very deep & serious outlook on women coming of age and-

Like, damn???

Something you have to understand is that on the internet people believe they have anonymity because they can't physically see the face of the other human they are communicating with. People tend to say stupid things due to said lack of thought so take it all lightly.

You basically just asked "Why do people care about things deeply?"

I personally don't have a problem and don't get offended if someone says they hate something that i really like. It's when i ask "Why do you think that way?" and they can't give me a proper/logical answer, that's when i get mad because then they're just trying to upset people with the statement rather than express a opinion.

People think that if someone has a different opinion then them, their opinion won't be as valid. Also, they care too much about what others think because they want to be accepted. It's like the "console wars". Even though each console has its problems, people defend the consoles as if their lives depend on it.

Life is boring to some people, so they latch onto to stuff to make it more exciting and worthwhile. Sometimes when you say something against so deeply profound to a person like that, it's almost earth shattering. I try not to step on toes with that.

I take very few things personally. Call me names, make fun of what I like or do and I'll just shrug. Call my mother names and I'll throw you in an incinerator.

There's a lot of people online that just like to troll and role play. There are several right on the CR forums..One minute you think they were with Moses when he parted the Red Sea ,and the next they're helping Marx write his lament about religion being the opiate of the masses. It really has more to do with ego and portraying an image then it has to do with deep held convictions.I agree with you about Kill la Kill which is more about satisfying the sexual desires of the fanbase rather than a plotline.

Some people are sensitive to certain things.

This thread is so vaguely vague vagueballs, but alright, cool.

I think everyone is sensitive about certain topics, some based on personal experience, some based on other things, some based in your own beliefs, blah blah blah, not everyone's gonna respect your sensitivity, let alone your opinion, especially if it's easy to misinterpret what one says. Like I know i whine a lot about my past experiences, I'm trying to do so less, but it's kinda hard to let go of the ass who sent you to a hospital and sent you to self harm. There is one person I know, who was an extremist and still is an extremist? And I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive them because in my mind they're the one who helped set me off on a path to hating everything and everyone, that bitter form of extremism that left me with many mental wounds because in the aftermath is was very difficult to revert back to being "normal" again. Lara will always be a POS SJW with an ugly countenance and an even uglier set of words. That's why I dislike whiny pissbabies. You guys are just hurting yourselves.

At this point I'm not offended by people as much as I just feel BAD, knowing that the kind of extremist behavior they exhibit is actually eating them away. Feeling like you're on top of the world now? Come back in five months and tell me you feel the same, I dare you.

There are certain things I know I am sensitive to otherwise, my character, the character I favor is a very bad person, but I created his backstory on my own and am very passionate about him. Whenever I see people flagrantly go on a tightrope to insult him, I feel my chest cinch up. I feel all alone in this nowadays, I'm getting distanced from my old rp friends because I'm scared portraying him is gonna turn me into a "monster" as people think he is and make them I approve of his actions. But I DONT. I DONT. And that is what HURTS me the most.

Its just that people who really like a show tend to be passionate about it; and when someone shits on it or talks badly about it, they take up arms and defend it.

When someone insults a show I care about and shit on it without knowing anything about it (because 8/10 times they haven't even watched it, and they are simply repeating verbal diarrhea they have collected from elsewhere) I will defend it. Just like when I make my normal grandiose statement that "all harems suck" I expect someone to tell me why I am wrong.

However, people in general have gotten extremely sensitive to just about everything. You can make a joke about something or someone and someone who is completely irrelevant to the butt of the joke will get offended on behalf of the person being made fun of.

When people are passionate about a subject they tend to get pretty heated when discussing it.

I think people get defensive because it's a threat to what they believe they know. In a way it's a threat to the way they perceive reality.

If you really knew something you wouldn't need to defend it or take it personally because you would kinda be over it since you know what it is and that's just how it is.
Kinda how I don't need to defend the notion of we inhale and exhale air to live that's just how it is. The act of defending your fixed notion of something is primarily due to the doubt of your own belief ,and it's a belief and not something you know because of what I layed out last sentence.

Now If you know you believed you know it wouldn't matter If someone challenged the way you perceive whatever it is because you knew it was just a belief and that you really didn't know so you can play around and argue/converse with little to no conflict and actually have some fun.

All in all I think it has to do with needing to know something or needing to have something to be true.

I don't even know if this makes sense entirely so my bad if it doesn't.

Looking at the KLK example, I think the phrase "takes things personally" is wrong. It is essentially asking a combination of "why do people care about things" and "why do people try to discuss things on discussion boards". The answers to both should be fairly self evident. I think people need to stop thinking that disagreement means that someone "took something personally" or is "offended" or worse, is committing "harassment". We are on a discussion board. Discussion is kinda the point...

PS: I've actually had a pretty in depth discussion about KLK with megahobbit a while back if anyone cares to peruse through my thoughts. The framing of the question was revolving around sexism, but overall it was a good chat. It starts about here:

People gotta realize nobody is gonna agree with you or have the same interests as you all the time tbh
Yet, people still feel the need to do this, come outta nowhere & present to me a 5 paragraph essay on why I should like it/take it seriously/why they're offended by my statement.

My friend loves romance anime
I hate romance anime's. I can never find them entertaining in the slightest. She understands that though, and doesn't try to convince me to like it & understands why I don't like it.
And I do the same with her.

Why can't people be more like that?
