How people want to describe their own self image is their business.

Because the United States media has a way of setting standards for what is good looking. Ironically these same people have the worst kind of personalities.

You ever been to South Korea? Asia? Boy oh boy...

I think it's easier to just label yourself somewhere on the extreme sides of the spectrum because sometimes you really do just consider yourself and FEEL ugly when surrounded by more attractive people.

If I'm having a bad day and I feel inferior, I'm not going to look at myself in the mirror and say "Damn, I'm such a 6/10."I'm going to feel freaking ugly and wish I was more attractive.

I've always figured I'm ugly since the only comment I've had on my looks from the opposite sex is that I'm ugly. Not that I'm too bothered now, I've never been caught up in my looks, but it did sting a little at the time. But yes, I see more people who look average than people who are ugly, that's for sure.

I think ugliness is really in someone's personality. Someone can be attractive physically, until they open their mouths and suddenly.. they're not so hot. I believe that as long as someone is a kind person, they can be beautiful/handsome.

In myself, there have been times where I have felt ugly but on a superficial level. It doesn't bug me anymore, really.

I thought I was ugly because I was fat. So I lost the fat and my self esteem went up.

I've honestly only ever been called ugly by my sister in real life and she's just trying to get back at me because i used to always make mean jokes about her xD.
Besides my mom, only ever had random older women/men stop me to comment on my looks. The rest are probably not worthy of remembering. I like old people.

When i was younger, i always dished out compliments, but only to make others feel uncomfortable :D.

Lets try to avoid making broad generalizations of people and or saying rude things about those incredibly sweeping generalizations at the same time. Ok?

And confusion sets in...

Where is any of that happening here?

OP has a point.
It's true that ugliness is as rare as beauty and the viewer's perspective plays the most important part of this.
And an ugly personality leaves a much more powerful impression on me than an ugly appearance

also this

Because the beauty industry is a multi billion dollar per year industry. If you're not convinced that you're ugly and that make-up, a new wardrobe and cosmetic medical procedures can make you more attractive, these industries won't thrive.

It is, therefore, in the best interest of the media to convince you that you are not only ugly, but that you can become more attractive to the opposite sex if you just buy that new cream or get that nip/tuck.

It is in your best interest to love yourself for who you are. Easier said than done, yes, but the sooner you can embrace yourself for all your imperfections and quirkiness, the happier and more confident you'll be.

And richer. Especially if you're a woman. Cosmetics and purses can really add up.

a lot of people think they're ugly because they're told so by others that don't care about them.

I think alot of people are ugly. In all honestly and a very vain person even though apparently I'm attractive enough to be with other people I find attractive however I don't think I am at all. However it's because I view beauty in a very jaded way due to looking feminine myself I find the more feminine you look the more attractive you are. It doesn't help a majority of my my ex girlfriends would say I look more feminine than they were and would get angry about it for specific reasons and boys who were struggling with their bisexuality would like me because it was easier for them to be attracted to someone who didn't look manly. However due to my current relationship I keep my hair shorter than I want to look more like a boy than a girl once this relationship is over I'll most likely let my hair grow out again and return to how I use to look.
