The similarities are just so distracting...
Obviously somebody was like, let's make something extremely similar to that other successful franchise, so we are almost guaranteed to also make a lot of money without much of any risk!

I mean I'm only two episodes in and I can't get out of my head!

"let's make something extremely similar to that other successful franchise" This is present in every form of media, I don't see why it's surprising in the slightest. As for this in particular, it is just moe 101 and hundreds of series use these archetypes.

Does it matter? Both shows are entertaining. Ignore the similarities and enjoy the show. Also if you don't cry at aishiteru banzai then you are a heartless monster!

The personalities are. They're stereotypical character types but still they both make for good shows.

Posted literally seconds before I was going to post the same thing... With the exception of Umi and Mio.

I mean, it's easy to just call them both moe anime, and draw nonexistent similarities between the characters. I love both of them, but the characters really aren't that similar. At the very least none of those, except Umi and Mio.

As someone who felt similarly to the OP and who isn't really into "idol" anime I'm going to advise giving it the "Three Episode Test". I thoroughly enjoyed the series and even though it's very much fluff it's fun fluff.

Give it a go, you may be surprised.

As someone who watched and loved both Love Live and K-On, I didn't really notice very many similarities.

Their personalities aren't even really that similar. That's notwithstanding the fact that Love Live has 9 girls and K-On has 5 (4 initially).. You completely left out Ritsu. If it was a copy, i'd expect some sort of match for her since she's a pretty major part of the show

Personally, I don't feel like K-On an Love Live are alike at all. I honestly think it has far mroe in common with other idol shows than something like K-On.

That's..ok. I watched Love Live! And watched K-On a few months later. Love both shows so so much (and incidentally my favourite characters is Kotori and Mugi) but they are not similar. And I love Yui and dislike Honoka so the comparison doesn't work haha XD

Not disagreeing that characters from either franchise mostly do not diverge from established character archetypes. I don't agree, however, that they are of the same character archetypes.

Agreed.

Umi and Mio are the strongest argument to be made, though they diverge wildly in who they come through the story (and could be even be argued that the purpose they serve in the beginning is not similar at all. Mio was the one trying to form the club, whereas Umi was trying to tell Honoka how ridiculous her goal was).

Watch Love Live, it'll steal your heart. Just don't play the game, it steals your heart. Then your soul.

Despite the similarities LL is still entertaining as was K-On, and IMHO they still have quite different premises, idols /=/ school band. I mean, sure, they're both performers but they're far from the same thing, just b/c both shows involve cute moe girls doesn't mean the content is the same
