I saw a similar topic elsewhere on another site but personally, I think GATE has quite a diverse range in terms of portraying its technology...

And with the war themes that adapts the story, perhaps we can learn some about the show. Feel free to list any of them that you come across or are familiar with. I'm not an expert on military though but I heard that the JSDF has some interesting arsenal in their sleeves.

From the latest episode, I think there's the Bell AH-1 Cobra

Every bit of the weapons that the JSDF uses in Gate is real. And, yes, that is a Cobra attack gunship. The other helicopters are Bell U-1H Hueys, which use the same engines as the Cobras. I'm laughing at the sitting on the helmet bit. That is something US troops did in Vietnam.

I am so happy to have a show where they get the military (both tech and soldiers) right.

Not sure what model the bayonet gun is based on. I think it's just the standard version they are using this week. I am definitely not an expert on firearms.

The equipment in the show is all pretty much second line stuff in Japan
This is for three reasons
1. A lot of new modern equipment relies on GPS and there is no GPS in the other world
2. They are doing this operation on a shoe string budget and the older equipment is cheaper to operate and maintain
3 If they have to abandon it and retreat back through the gate it's equipment Japan can afford to loose

It's a Howa Type 64 battle rifle. It is old stuff indeed. From at least twenty five year old stocks for sure. One of the last to have the wood furniture, (stock and grip.) It's been superseded a couple times by newer arms. But still in service with some parts of the SDF.
The handguns are accurately drawn also. They're Mineba 9mm made in Japan under license from Sig Sauer in Switzerland.
Anime is really good on the equipment details. The smaller two door "jeep" is a Type 73 Mitsubishi, the larger Hummer like one that Itami usually is in is a Toyota MegaCruiser.
One note on the Helicopters. They are actually made in Japan by Fuji under license from Bell.

I like how they even made reference to the Type 64 being old stock and "disposable" in an earlier episode. I'd have liked to have seen the Type 89 show up but alas; hopefully they get reissued with them at a later date.

I've been really impressed with how everything in the anime has been portrayed very accurately to it's real life counterpart. I might be wrong, but wasn't the writer a part of the JSDF?

I've been wondering this as well. In most anime the JSDF is fodder but here it's front and center heroes.

I'm not familiar with the author but wouldn't be surprised if he does have real life knowledge about military.

Howa Type 64 battle rifle. Japanese built, gas operated battle rifle. Because REAL men use battle rifles and not assault rifles!

EDIT: Also they're flying the Bell AH-1S Cobra which is a Japanese licensed and built Cobra which uses a single engine unlike the American twin engine Cobra.

Double Edit: I was a bit late with that news. Spike beat me to it and I never realised. My Otaku sense just kicked in to over drive and I posted without checking further down

Huh, I was thinking that they where using FN FAL from the looks, never kept up on Japanese weapons because they aren't ones I can pay with.

I like my M77PS for Real Fuckin' NATO work.
