I pay money to not see Google or adds.

I pay money. I have paid for Years. You know back is the brave new world times. This capture thing is a pain in the ass. All I want to do is if I log in with my auto log in and saved password. Like I have done for a long time. But today I got those dumb Google things. This makes me accessing my anime more difficult. Not cool. I pay for no ads and no Google garbage. If I mess up my password sure, use it.

I pay money to not see Google or adds.

I pay for convenience.

This, I think:

I don't know if it's happening all the time (I stay logged in on my computer and rarely have to actually log in) but I've been seeing it happen recently.

And it only seems to be happening on my PC. (I frequently have to log in via my iPad because it doesn't keep me logged in for some reason, but I"ve never seen it there.)

I have not seen this yet.

If the "Captcha" is what you are referrring to, it's not an ad. It's a way to verify you're a person and not some automated thingy logging in.

Hmmm. This recent post in a thread about it suggests that it does come and go, and has recently come.

/forumtopic-851205/is-the-captcha-a-permanent-fixture-now?pg=2#50961821

I seem to recall in the past seeing something that indicated they only use it when there's very high traffic or something., which would explain why it mostly doesn't happen, but then there might be periods of time when it's being used due to high traffic or some kind of problem.

Yesterday I made a post about accounts getting hacked a bunch more, so maybe this is also part of that as well?

I think his concern is ip tracking since the challenge response of the captcha service is from a google address. CR embeds way too many images on their pages that are off-site loaded.

There are other problems with CR's captcha setup:

Even if the login-password is correct, the captcha requirement is presented after the act, and the password field auto cleared, requiring the user to essentially login twice. If CR is requiring a captcha, present it up front on the initial session. (This is a bit of a pain on a smartphone too, not only seeing the captcha image, but having to reload and re-enter stuff.)

CR keeps claiming there are two words for the captcha. This is weird and wrong, since the majority of the time, only one image is actually presented by the system. And regardless of one or two images presented for the captcha, it seems you only need to enter the (first) one correctly. A user can get confused by this, thinking the system is broken or keep refreshing until they get the two images (usually the second image is ridiculously unclear too).

If a person cannot login due to a broken captcha system, they cannot get help from CR through normal channels, as they cannot post to forums (not logged in), nor can they contact CR support using the web form, since the support form requires a captcha from non-logged in users in order to submit it (also with the two words "feature"). CR's created a single point of failure.

Even if they could contact CR support, your now tiered support system for premium members results in a typical 2-day wait. This seems ridiculous for someone who has paid up front for their monthly membership and cannot log in. And that's if they get a on-point response (which, lately, almost never happens).

I'm not sure what's been going on at CR for the past 2-3 months, but with the breakdown of comments, the captcha issue, and support pretty much making no sense in their replies or completely broken, I'm wondering if CR is being overwhelmed or they lost some sysadmins or programming talent.

Got a link to your post/that forum thread? (I couldn't find it using search for some reason.) Today, I noticed the sudden return of activity that I thought CR had solved with a certain user, so I'm wondering if it's related.

Most likely the Captcha is showing up for accounts that have had repeated failed login attempts.

That could be a sign that someone has your information from another site (username/password combination) and is trying to see if that information will work with your Crunchyroll account. This is most likely how all of the recent Crunchyroll accounts have been "hacked".

A good piece of information is to always use a different password for each account. For all important accounts, I use a long and unique password. For none important accounts (ones that I don't care if someone gets into as they can't do any damage anyways), I will use a shared password with a shared throw away gmail account I created specifically for signing up to random sites to catch all of the spam they send.

PS - For people who hate Captcha, after I learned what Captcha is used for, I have greater respect for it now. A lot of people don't know since most people don't click on the "What is Captcha?" button, but Captcha is used to improve computer text and handwriting recognition. That is why the images look like text from a picture or a book. The software looks at all of the responses and "learns" what a word is. (This is also why sometimes you SWEAR you typed in a word correctly, but the Captcha still says you typed it in wrong). This learning helps improve the accuracy when old books are scanned and transferred to a digital form.

Just think of this the next time you see a Captcha box and maybe it will help control that irritating feeling.
