Alcohol has been proven to be healthy in scant moderation (a little once or twice a month) to help clean your system. Used in excess, it it damaging to your system, not to mention addictive.

Well me personally I'm straightedge, and have been for years. I don't drink, smoke, use drugs, eat red meat, or drink caffeine.

That said, I'm not "militant", which means the people who go out and literally "enforce" these by beating people they see drinking or smoking, sometimes killing them, which marked it as a gang.

My motto - My life, my body, my ways. It should be that way for everyone.

I consider myself strait-edge as well. I don't drink, smoke, use even recreational drugs like pot (legal in my state), abstain from caffeine, and all that. I don't shy away from meat, but I will usually opt for chicken or fish over red meat.

Glad to know there are others like me. (I am also not militant)

Funny for me, caffeine has the opposite effect. I never get the pick-me-up from it. I immediately hit the low. If I ever have a hard time sleeping, I could drink and energy drink and would be out in 10 minutes.

Many drugs that save lives are toxic. Their toxicity is a factor in their function, chemotherapy is a prime example. Alcohol is toxic, but the body is well equipped to handle it in small enough amounts. It will not cause lasting harm if consumed in sufficient moderation. For some people (like me), it has more health benefits than drawbacks. Several studies have shown that certain autoimmune disorders have slower progress and less intense flare ups if you consume slightly more booze than is recommended for a normal healthy individual. Considering mine could kill me if it progresses too quickly, a bit of very slightly toxic booze sounds great! Especially since the only alternative at the moment is immunosuppressants that make you far more susceptible to illness and would force me to leave my job and withdraw my daughter from daycare. Not really an option.

Actually it has some health benefits to humans in small amounts. I think we drank enough booze that our genetics adapted to use of it.

Yes, alcohol is poison. This is objectively true. However, many/most medications can be considered poisons in a sense. One serving* of alcohol per day may help prevent heart disease. If that serving happens to be red wine, it may also help prevent diabetes. More than one serving, however, and it becomes more detrimental than beneficial to one's health.
Personally, I don't drink. That's because it is virtually impossible for me to stop at one serving of alcohol.
*(Approx. 12oz beer or 5oz wine, I believe.)

Haha, I don't care if someone drinks a little. Nobody lives forever anyway.

I'll drink to that.

Cheers!

I remember my Chemistry teacher saying, "Once I tell you what alcohol is and what it does to you... You will never drink again!"

I had a beer for her sake when I got home.

Too much of it for a long period of time and in excess does damage you. Drinking in moderation and with a cup of water around helps out a lot.
