Why can't those sort of shows stick around and other sorts get made? Are Japanese production studios that afraid of risk and diversification?

Yes. Pandering shows are much more marketable to sell merch and thats were they get all there money. Like it or not a more cerebral show wont sell as much body pillows as a pandering one. This pretty much gives the effect of only 2-4 good shows being released a year. Im not saying pandering stuff shouldnt exist but when its the main driving source of the market thats unhealthy for artistry.

New Hollywood produced some of the greatest films to have ever existed and that happened after the Major Studios found out that there attempts to pander to the hippie market had failed horribly.

Stuff like this makes me sad to be an anime fan especially now with all the pandering shows (Outbreak Company), Loli infestation (Fate/Kaleid) and sexualization of underage girls (No Game No Life) and how we accept this as fans.

You didn't enjoy NGNL?

Dropped that show faster than a heated plate. Nothing says quality like opening up on a 13 years olds panties.

That sucks. You're literally missing out on a good story. Not that you care since everyone on the internet values the insight of their own farts more than someone in the forums they proactively seek out to inter mingle with.

The Tokuma Shouten booth at this year's Comiket 88 sold a 100,000 yen ($80 USD), 22 ft (7 meter) long dakimakura, aka hug/body pillow of her in full size. They even hung it like a shrine above their booth.

hate to be that guy but 100,000 yen is ~$800, not $80. Which doesn't help because that's still ridiculous and people need to chill.

There is a lot of issues with the show especially the premise. They always win. Now from the start you know no matter what they will win any challenge regardless. Now this can still be interesting if they executed it right instead they sexualized many females and underage girls (you can call her 400 years old for all I care but if she looks like she is six and the other looks like she is eight), and made up their own rules to keep the premise correct. Knowing that they are strong instead of invincible would have been a huge help for the show as this crippled it from episode one and the sexualization destroyed any credibility of there being a game of intellect going on.

And yet it has been said that Japanese production studios largely aren't interested in what consumers in foreign markets think of their products or what directions they'd like to see taken in the future, instead being solely interested in whether we're buying. Assuming that's the case what are we to do but rely upon the Japanese consumer to decide a new direction is needed?

Yeah im just saying this as an outsider. Its not like the american nerd market is any better at supporting artistry, take a look at what a pandering mess mainstream gaming is.

You make a great case for valuing results over the steps taken to achieve said results. The anime focuses on how they go about overcoming a series of incredible difficult challenges in the format of different cerebral based mind games. And they are "self touted" as never having lost and will never lose, but that doesn't mean they absolutely can't. They claim they are unbeatable, but they aren't, don't kid yourself over what they say.

Have you actually consumed any good amount of the material from the LN or Anime or are you speaking from your opinion about the aesthetic side of marketing like the last guy because I'm pretty sure premature opinions seem to be the theme of this thread. Pun not intended.

I'm accustomed to people hating moesh**, not stories that actually have very well thought out plot like NGNL

That would be highly entertaining. Probably even better than the show.

The fun of No Game, No Life for me was seeing how the main characters were going to win, not determining whether they were going to win. I also enjoyed Steph's candor and courage, though she was made helpless and incompetent for the purposes of providing light comical relief, avoiding establishing a character who outshines the main protagonists, and providing another moe character. Which hey, if moe's your thing you'll get no judgment from me. I like Steph.

Anyway, I still contend that this pillow is a fantastic gag item.
