Hikari stood in a meadow, looking at her reflection in a small pond of crystal clear blue water. 'I haven't grown an inch or gained any weight since I was, what, 9? 10? Do I just not eat enough or what?' she thought to herself. People always mistook her for a little kid, she was so weak and tiny. She saw a rabbit and picked it up, cradling it in her arms and petting it. "You understand me, don't you? There's all those other big animals that see you as dinner because they think you're small and helpless."

Ryouta walked into the forest clearing, expecting to be alone; this was the place where he often came to think and relax. However, upon entering the clearing he noticed a rather tiny and petite girl sitting near the meadow. His first instinct, as was always the case whenever he came across another person, was to run in the opposite direction. However, this girl was a mere child - clearly she was no threat to him. "I-is she talking to that rabbit...?" He wondered curiously. He hesitates, keeping to the shadows to observe the girl more.

Hikari saw the rabbit's ears start twitching nervously, and she looked across the pond to see a huge brown bear right across from them. It probably wanted to eat the rabbit she was holding in her arms. She looked back down at the small, furry creature. "Don't worry, I won't let that bear get you." When she looked back up, she saw that the bear was coming towards them. Soon it was only feet away from her. "What do you want?" The bear stood up on its hind legs, towering over her. Hikari started to back away a bit, and she was lucky she did, because the bear swiped and nearly missed her! The rabbit, scared, jumped right out of her arms and hopped away as fast as it could. "No! Come back!" But it was too late. The bear grabbed the rabbit and with one swift motion, it was dead. Hikari looked away as the bear ate it, not wanting to see that sight. "I'm sorry, little bunny...."

Ryouta watched in horror as the poor bunny was devoured the brown bear. He knew was all a part of nature, but it was still a gruesome sight to behold. He nearly cried out when he saw the bear nearly attack the little girl; she was lucky that the thing missed! But the girl was so distraught over the death of the bunny that she did not notice the bear was still advancing toward her. Taking a deep breath, he charges into the meadow. I hope it make it in time! He thinks to himself, terrified for the girl's safety. Just as the bear lets out an angry roar and takes another swipe at the girl, Ryouta dives and grabs the girl around the waist, pushing her down just in time.

Hikari looks up at the boy, and then realizes what had just happened. But before she can thank him, she sees that the bear is preparing for another attack! "Come on!" She stands up and grabs his hand, running into the meadow. "That's a brown bear, and brown bears can't climb trees! If we can find a tree high enough for it to not be able to reach us but sturdy enough for it to be unable to knock it down, we should be safe!" Hikari was horrible at climbing since she was so weak and tiny, but she could at least get this boy who had saved her to safety.

Ryouta, who was so stunned by this girl's initiative, allowed himself to be dragged by her deeper into the meadow. He nods silently at her explanation, knowing full well about brown bears and what kind of danger the two of them were in right now. He quickly examined this girl's body; she looked rather weak and frail, so there was no way she would be able to climb a tree fast enough in order to escape this beast. He decided that since she was being so nice to him, he would help her out. He smiles and lets go of her hand, coming to a full stop and turning around to face the bear. The creature was lumbering toward them. Without looking back at the girl he says, "Don't worry about me. Just get to safety, okay?"

Hikari turned and looked back at the boy. "B-but I can't leave you...!" She didn't want him to get hurt, or even killed, trying to protect her. She'd just met him and he'd already saved her once. Plus, she knew she couldn't climb a tree, so why should he risk himself when all she could do was keep running? She probably couldn't do that for much longer either; she was already getting tired. "I know you just told me not to worry about you, but what if something happens to you? I'm not strong enough to run much longer anyway or climb a tree, so I might as well hold off the bear so you can get away."

Ryouta was honestly touched by the girl's concern for him. No one had ever cared whether he lived or died so much in his entire life. He wanted to repay that kindness in full. Without looking back at her he said, "Don't worry, I'll be fine. Even if you can't run anymore or climb a tree in your current condition, just keep going forward. I promise, this thing won't get anywhere near you." He smiles and adds, "Nothing is going to happen to me, I promise." He waits for the bear to get a bit closer. It was almost time to show off his one and only special skill.

"A-alright...." Hikari did as he said, turning around and running as fast as she could. She trusted that the boy would keep his word and come back unharmed. All she could do was run away and hope. After a few minutes she stopped and sat on the ground. She couldn't run anymore. She would sit here and wait for him to get back. 'Now that I think about it, I never got his name...' she thought. Hopefully he would come back soon and she could ask for it.

Ryouta smiles to himself as he hears the girl's footsteps pick up, meaning that she had heeded his words and ran away. With the bear just a few feet away, he closes his eyes and starts to steady his breathing and slow his heart rate. This was going to take a bit more concentration than he was used to, but he knew he would be able to pull it off if this girl's life was on the line. "I can do this... I can do this..." He tells himself, mentally chanting. A noticeable change in the atmosphere permeates, causing the hairs on his neck and arms to stand up. At the last possible moment, Ryouta opens his eyes and sees that the bear is upon him. The raging, snarling beast raises its paw to take a swipe at him. And in a loud, booming voice that one would not believe could be possessed by someone so slight Ryouta utters a single command: "STOP!" The bear freezes mid-motion, as if time itself had stopped. Ryouta allows a tiny smirk to form on his lips.

Hikari heard the boy yell. "Did something happen?" She stood up and went back to where they were to see the bear frozen mid-swipe and the boy with a little smirk on his face. "W-what...? What happened here...?" Why would the bear just suddenly stop? Did the boy do something? Hikari just stared at the scene I'm front of her, speechless.

His gaze still fixed on the bear Ryouta commands in his normal voice, "Go away. We aren't bothering you, so please leave us alone." The bear unfreezes, shakes its massive furry head, then turns around and skulks away. Once it has left, Ryouta lets out an audible sigh and collapses, exhausting overtaking his entire body. He had never used that skill on such a large, powerful animal before, and doing so had drained him almost completely. With what little energy that remained in his body he says to the girl, "S-see...? Told ya everything would be okay..." He then loses consciousness, fading into a dreamless sleep.

"Oh no!" Hikari kneels down and shakes the boy, but gives up when he doesn't wake up. At least he was still breathing. "Um... what do I do...?" She didn't want to drag him along the ground but she knew she didn't have the strength to pick him up. She couldn't just leave him there though! She decided to try and carry him to a better, safer place. There might be snakes on the ground after all.... She used all of her strength and managed to pick him up and start carrying him. Eventually she came to a clearing and put him down, then collapsed onto the ground, exhausted. "I think I'll just... rest here for a while...." She looked over at the boy again. He wasn't hurt, thankfully, but she still didn't know what he'd done to that bear. It had seemed like mind control, but she didn't know how he could possibly do that. She decided to stop thinking about it; they were both safe and the bear was gone, and that's all that mattered right now.

The next time Ryouta opens his eyes, the scenery around him is almost completely dark. He has vague recollections of what he had done: Chasing off a bear to protect a little girl, and then he had collapsed from using too much mental energy. He tries to sit up, but his muscles are too stiff and sore for any sort of physical activity; the most that he can do is turn his head from side to side. And the first thing he noticed when he turned his head was a tiny, frail looking figure lying next to him: It was the little girl from earlier! She was resting peacefully, gently breathing in and out. "She actually stuck around...." He thinks, and for some reason this makes him smile softly. "She could have just left me here once she was out of danger, but she actually waited around to see if I was okay..." It was such a simple gesture, but it touches Ryouta deeply. Although he is wide awake now, he closes his eyes and lies there, waiting for the girl to regain consciousness as well. "She was so nice to me. I can at least repay her kindness..."
