Ryouta is not at all surprised when he hears Hikari's answer. He knew that he had not properly explained himself, and felt stupid because of it. It was one of the drawbacks of never speaking with other people. He closes his eyes, takes a moment to collect his thoughts, nods, and then tries his best to explain. "Earlier, I saw you talking to that bunny....and, I was wondering if....if you could their voices, too. A-animals, I mean." Ever since he was a child, he had been able to communicate with animals, and have full-on conversations with them at times. And there were even times when he could exert some level of control over them, like with the bear earlier. It was one of the many reasons why people bullied him, because they thought he was weird for talking to animals all the time. "Sh-she is probably going to think I'm weird and stupid, too. She might even run away scared..." He thinks darkly.

"I talk to animals, but I can't hear their thoughts... It's pretty cool that you can!" She wondered what the animals thought. It would be cool to be able to understand them. One thing was for sure: Ryouta was one special person. She was lucky to have met someone like him. This probably had something to do with what he did to the bear, too. It was amazing, she'd never known that someone would be able to do something like that... She'd love to have an ability such as his, but Ryouta's power was unique to him, and she liked that. Uniqueness was a quality she liked in things, from people to animals to plants.

Ryouta's eyes widen when Hikari says this to him. "R-really?!" He exclaims, caught off-guard by her positive words. He had never met anyone who thought his power was cool before. He found that the more he talked to Hikari, the more he liked her. It was so hard talking to people, but not with Hikari. It was silly to think, but maybe it was fate that brought the two of them together this way? Clearly Hikari was a person who loved animals just as much as he did, and she seemed genuine in her enthusiasm over what he'd just told her. He blushes and smiles softly. "She definitely isn't like everyone else...." He thinks. He nods and says, "It is pretty cool. Animals are a lot of fun to talk to...they're also very honest. I get along with them...a lot better than I do with humans."

"I can understand that. The only humans that come around here usually are the hunters, kids doing dumb things like dares or scaring animals for fun out of boredom, and people hiking." All the people she talked to always said things like 'How do you even survive here?', 'You poor thing!', and things like that, and the kids made dumb comments like 'How do you live without TV or video games?' and 'Where do you go to the bathroom?'. Ryouta was a pleasant change from all that; he was someone she could actually have a nice conversation with, and he was very kind to her. 'Do I actually have a friend now?' she thought, and a bit excitedly too.

"I know how you feel. The only time someone ever talks to me is when....they are insulting me, calling me a freak or a weirdo..." He almost mentioned that it was mostly his family that spoke these harsh words to him, but then he recalled that Hikari did not even have a family. It would be rude of him to badmouth his family when this girl had none. He looks around at the scenery and whispers, more to himself than to Hikari, "I would love to live here...far away from all those humans, far away from the city....." Here, it was peaceful, it was relaxing. There was no one casting cruel or judgmental eyes upon him, no one beating him up and breaking his bones just take out their own frustrations at the world. There were only the animals, and the tranquil sounds of nature. "And...Hikari....my first real friend." He thought to himself, feeling a bit silly and presumptuous. "She's the nicest person I've ever met. I want to be her friend."

"That's horrible...." She couldn't imagine people insulting her 24/7. And to a person like Ryouta... why...? Why would someone want to hurt someone so kind, caring, and sensitive as him? This made her want to be his friend even more. She wanted him to have someone there for him, someone that wouldn't insult him but instead say kind words. She vowed that she would be that friend, even if it meant taking all that pain for him. She looked at Ryouta, but when she opened her mouth to say something, she found she couldn't find the correct words. She decided to be blunt about it. "Ryouta, will you be my friend?" She felt childish saying it, it sounded like what a kindergartener would say, but she didn't know how else to say it.

Ryouta looked at Hikari for a moment. He was not certain he had her correctly. She...wanted to be his friend? No one had ever wanted to be his friend, or had ever bothered to pretend to want to be. But she was so kind, friendly, and sincere. Yes, he most definitely wanted to be Hikari's friend! He wanted to sit with her, talk to her about animals and all sorts of other things, and just be around her as much as he could! She was truly a good person, this Hikari, and Ryouta felt...blessed...was that the correct word? Yes, he was blessed to have met this girl this day. He nods and says in a small, happy voice, "Y-yes...I would like to be your friend...i-if you'll accept me..." He blushes deeply. My first friend, he thinks, overcome with joy.

"Of course I'll accept you!" Hikari was the happiest she had ever been. She finally had a friend! Someone who cared about her, someone she could talk to. She'd never had anyone like that.... It seemed like fate that they met today. She was so lucky Ryouta had come out and saved her from that bear. No, lucky didn't describe it, it was more than that. She just couldn't find the right word.... But she knew it was something amazing.

Ryouta grins from ear to ear, the biggest smile he had ever had in his life, when he hears Hikari's response. He did it! His very first friend! Someone who actually cared about him, who did not look down on him or judge him! His heart swelled at the thought of being friends with this girl. This was definitely fate; after all, both he and Hikari had admitted that they were not good around people, and Hikari even admitted that she usually hid from people who entered the meadow. Some higher power brought them together this day, for the sake of forming this wonderful bond...this amazing thing called friendship. Ryouta was so happy that he was speechless. All he could do was continue smiling.

Hikari looked up at the sky and saw that the sun was setting. "Oh, it's getting late...." She'd have to find shelter soon; many animals hunt at night, so she couldn't risk being out. Unfortunately, this also probably meant that Ryouta would have to go home soon.... She didn't want to say goodbye to her new friend, but she knew he'd be back tomorrow. She'd make sure he got out of the meadow safely then go find someplace to sleep tonight.

Ryouta had not noticed it until Hikari said something, but she was right: It was getting late. He did not want to leave his new friend just yet, but he figured that she would need time to find shelter from the nocturnal predators that called this place home. He looked around and nodded, "Yeah...it is...." He was just about to get up and leave, but then he thought....."No one would care if I didn't come home. They probably wouldn't even notice." He did not want to overstay his welcome, but he wanted to ask, even if he was afraid of the answer. "W-would it be alright if.....if I stayed here....just for tonight...?" He lowered his gaze.

"You want to stay here? You're welcome to, but it's a bit dangerous at night...." She didn't want her new friend to be in danger or get hurt. But she would prevent that from happening. She stood up. "Well, I guess we should find a place to sleep then." She'd never had someone stay with her, so she had to make sure of a few things this time instead of just finding a suitable place. It had to be big enough to fit both of them comfortably along with being protected and hidden.

Ryouta nods. "Yes, I would like to stay. And...you don't have to worry about danger....remember?" He lets a little smirk form on his lips as he recalled the incident with the bear from earlier. He knew Hikari must have learned to be cautious, living in the meadow, but he never had problems with animals. He looks around and adds, "They won't bother us. Not tonight, at least. Mr. Bear warned some of them about me." He meant for this to be a joke. He stands up as well, waiting to see what happened next. Obviously, they were going to have to find shelter. Where did Hikari normally sleep, he wondered? He was starting to get excited. It was like he was going camping with friends.

Hikari laughed a bit at Ryouta's joke. "Ah yes, I remember." They should probably find a place away from this clearing; animals would probably come here. She started walking, looking around as she did. She couldn't find anywhere so far.... Some nights she couldn't find anywhere decent and ended up sleeping in the next best place, and that sometimes had consequences. Hopefully that wouldn't be the case tonight, especially with Ryouta here.

Ryouta smiled when he heard Hikari laugh. As the two of them walk along, he looks around at the scenery of the forest, totally in awe. He had never been here at night before, and it looked so much different - almost magical somehow. He felt silly for thinking this and did not voice this thought out loud. But instead, despite his not wanting to look even stupider than he had earlier, he asks Hikari, "Um...if you don't mind my asking...where do you normally sleep?"
