[Ushio and Tora] Who is Hakumen no Mono?

I'm not asking that question, I'm answering it...sort of.

Hakumen no Mono, the main villain of "Ushio and Tora," who was just revealed in episode 7, is based on a character from Japanese folklore as well as a character from Chinese history/legend/culturally important novel that has totally been adapted into anime/manga before.

Obviously what follows contains spoilers for Hakumen no Mono's nature and backstory, though Hakumen no Mono's legendary connection is only implied (albeit with very conclusive proof) in the story; that being said, if you hate spoilers you should probably stop here and come back after the anime concludes.
