I think it would be a really helpful study tool if we could get Japanese subtitles on some programs. I certainly wouldn't expect them on every program, but maybe there could be select programs representative of different linguistic complexity and/or literacy levels or maybe just the most popular programs could receive this feature. If anyone has other ideas to contribute, please do.

It would be good to have japanese subtitles but many people say that the Japanese used in anime is very informal and they say that it would just make you seem weird if you try but it does seem to help learn Japanese (minus kanji)

It does seem like a little too much work though for CR...

adding Japanese subtitles should be easy, in fact they may already have the subs lying around somewhere.
they need a source to translate the dialogues afterall.

having said that, the usefulness of Japanese subs would likely be limited to a small subset of CR users, since not many of us is interested in learning the language, or use anime for learning for that matter.

I imagine that most of these shows have captions already written for DVD production or closed captions on Japanese TV. If CR has to do any transcription, I see how that would be a poor investment of time and money, but if they are readily available, it'd be nice to have access to them.

I would expect the subs to be the same as they would appear on Japanese television. Romaji wouldn't do anyone any good.

Can anyone suggest any programs with both English and Japanese subtitles on DVD? I didn't want to do the Ghibli movies because the JP releases are very expensive and I want to work with a TV program with its shorter format, but longer term character and speech pattern exposure.

I'd rather have more English audio than Japanese subtitles.

I had never even considered the dubs. It runs completely counter to my intent in asking for Japanese subtitles, but I understand the feeling. Sometimes, I want to put a show on while I'm cleaning or something and I can't because I need to read to fully understand.

It'd be great if this was available, though it would probably be of interest only to the small minority here learning the language or already familiar with it. Ideal in my mind would be a relatively "normal" level Japanese script, which would include both Kanji and kana-- like what I remember being fairly common in Japan itself when watching TV while on vacation-- though with furigana as well. From a CR business perspective, though, it's probably too much work for too little yield, the audience being mainly people not in Japan.

2/3 of the respondents so far have favored the subtitles, which is pretty cool. I really did expect that more people in the CR community were interested in learning the language though as only about 50 people have responded.

I envisioned the use of kanji, kana, and furigana as well. It's pretty standard practice from what I remember of even variety shows that really have little reason to see any time invested in being subtitled given their mostly temporary nature.

it would be great for people who are learning japanese or at least are intrested in learning

tbh i think most of us have learned some japanese phrases and words from watching things such as anime, to have japanese subs would be great to me

Japanese subs would also be useful for those fluent in the language, but who are hearing-impaired.
