For me, I started learning Japanese by first starting to write hirigana and Katakana to learn the sounds. I married into a Japanese family and my mother in law was a big help in learning the language the difficult part for me was sentence structure but what I found very helpful was watching Japanese DVDs with no subtitles at all after I learned the sounds from hirigana. I got them at our Asian food store and I started with children's learning programs.

The DVD idea is a good one. I did watch Totoro without subtitles. It remains the only movie I have ever fully understood without subs, but reading is important to me. Even with English as a native language, it was literacy that really helped me to improve my speaking and listening skills. The ability to read allowed me to clarify all of those sounds I was hearing, but feeling unsure of. It never hurts to have additional paths to fluency.

Moderators, please note that there is a problem with the percentage here. The current total is 113.5%.

EDIT: It has since changed, but it always exceeds 100%. This holds true on every poll I've checked so far despite the radio buttons. What's going on with this?

Absolutely, it would mean I could learn to read as well as speak.

47 in favor, 17 against
that's 73.4% for and 26.6% against. not sure why the percentages are messed up.

It would be nice, though right now I can only manage Kana, though I am working on Kanji but it is a slow road. I suppose if the anime I was watching used it might help, after all I'd have a play by play audio of the text I am reading as well. Not to mention it being something I am actually interested in watching helps as well. The text books and educational dvds are boring the hell outta me.

Yes, I think there should be Kanji subtitles. I even tried to make my own poll thread, but failed pretty hard at it. I don't think kana subtitles would be as helpful as kanji, but who knows?

Another japanese learner here that would be delighted with Japanese subtitles.

They would not affect the experience of other people, but would surely help learners.

I'm happy to see that there are more people still interested in this option. I'd even be willing to pay an extra buck or two for the option. It would be really helpful. I'm watching Phoenix Wright, and it's the kind of series I'd be willing to watch multiple times, which makes it perfect for study.

I was just browsing Netflix, and I found that the recently added Originals from Japan all have multiple subtitle options, including Japanese CC. I checked out a little bit of the first episode of each, and they seemed pretty accurate to me.

Check out:
Good Morning Call
KuroMukuro
Atelier
Hibana Spark

There may be more.

I found another one today called Terrace House. I think I'm willing to watch reality programming if it means unscripted natural language study. Imagine if the people on The Real World were more polite. That's the impression I get from episode 1.
