A teenager named Light Yagami, who finds a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami, or death god. Once he discovers that any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, he begins to use it as a vigilante and bring justice to criminals. However, as criminals begin dropping dead left and right, the authorities become suspicious and turn to genius detective L to try and track down the killer. A deadly game of wits begins as Light tries to stay one step ahead of the police with Light hot on his heels on pursuit.

As a Death Note fan, I was excited to hear that a live action series adaptation was being made. Having now watched up to the latest episodes, the series does a good job of giving viewers the element of having you want to know what will happen next without necessarily staying in course with how we might have seen it in the manga or anime. The differences aren't really a big deal, though I must say one of the characters being presented as a puppet was both unexpected and a bit over on the creepy side. The show still have it's main characters of Light Yagami and L going up against each other in wits over trying to figure out the mystery of who Kira is and how he managed to commit so many mass murders.

As the series is still going on, there is so much to look forward to seeing. The changes makes you wonder how things will play out up to the very. The early introduction of a couple characters just presents more questions then we were probably intending to ask. I can't say this Death Note is my favorite of the various versions that I've seen but I can't hate on it either. There are a few small, minor details here and there about it that I'm not too happy about. L is probably my favorite character in the whole Death Note series and the way he is in this version wasn't what I was expecting. He seemed kind of cute as suppose to pale looking. The absence of a certain character was disappointing but considering how things played out, I guess they didn't need to bring her in. Again just a few small things, personally, but I've gotten past it to where I can still enjoy this version. This series gives you something new to keep up with the tone of unpredictability. I would still recommend this show whether you're familiar with Death Note or not.

I was there for the initial outbreak of Death Note fever in the mid-to-late 2000s and was caught up in it as well. How could I not? It was a gripping series of mind games expertly played out by characters that weren't that much older than I was at the time. It helped feed into my teenage delusions that I could outsmart adults. It also helped that it was a bit of a dark series where characters died on the regular, which is always a nice plus when it comes to endearing a series to teenage fans who want to pretend to be more "mature" than they were. What I'm trying to say is that I have some history with this series and all of its forms it came out in at the time, those being the manga, anime, and live action films.

To put it bluntly, that means I've experienced Death Note enough times to last me for a lifetime, so I was a bit wary when I heard there was going to be yet another take on the franchise and dreaded seeing what I had already seen play out before me again. Thankfully, the new TV drama put those worries to bed within the first few seconds of the first episode, when I saw Light enjoying a low level idol group's concert. I knew from that very moment that I wasn't in for the same old Death Note.

Oh to be sure this new series still hits many of the familiar beats, such as Light getting his Death Note from the shinigami Ryuk and Light vs. L, but there are many changes of both the minor and major varieties in this iteration of the franchise. Enough so that I think fans of the series should check it out, just to experience a version of Death Note that can manage to leave them guessing this many years later. Really the only major complaint I have is that the CGI used for the shinigami is rather jarring, with Ryuk and Rem sticking out like sore thumbs when they are in the human world. But that is about the only significant issue I have with an otherwise solid entry in the Death Note series.

I actually liked the films a lot - but I've heard excellent things about this live action adaptation (which it would be REALLY nice for CrunchyRoll to get ~ahem~
The really interesting Death Note adaptation I want to see is the musical LOL (it's Korean) Junsu plays L. I've seen excerpts but it would be nice to see how that actually works overall.

I like it so far but Light killing the FBI guy who was after him and L simply ignoring that fact was so much bull. Come ooon. It was pretty obvious Light killed him, he'd number 1 suspect right after that.

Actually, it was initially setup so that it couldn't easily be tracked back to Light.
