Aldaris couldn't help but embrace her. His eyes were burning with such anger after hearing what those...monsters...did to her. Unforgivable! Absolutely unforgivable...

He held her tight and whispered words of comfort to her. "You don't have to continue Raven. If it hurts, please don't force yourself. Please, remember...they're not here anymore. You're safe...they're not gonna hurt you anymore..." As she calmed down, he told her his story. As promised, a story for a story. "When I was born, everything was right. My family loved me and cared for me like any normal child. But when I was of age to manifest bending I...I never had the spark. From then on, I was treated no more than dirt in their eyes. The beatings, the insults...they never stopped until my grandfather took me in and cared for me. He gave me an education, he fed me, clothed me, and protected me as best he could. He brought me to teachers that would impart their skills and teachings to me...to better prepare me for what's to come. So I am. My master made this out to be a test. Out here in the woods...surviving till the seventh day."

He looked at her before continuing, "You know, I never told anyone about this...not even my grandfather and masters. When I become a hunter, I plan on acquiring the power of bending the corrupted elements. These powers represent the wrath of nature...the fury of the world given form. With this...I wouldn't be weak. With this I could defend those I consider precious and myself from all harm. This...is my dream. A dream that one day would turn to reality..." He finished with a voice filled with determination and conviction.

He was so sure of himself about his dream that he was prepared to pay the price once he acquires it for good.

Raven looked at him with awe. Never had she thought about something like this. He was like her, but he was going to get stronger. He was going to prove his family and everyone wrong and he was going to win.

And suddenly, her anger came. She'd repressed it for years living with them, the shock of what had just happened overshadowing her other emotions. Raven reached out, grabbing his forearm with such strength she surprised herself. "Teach me. I want to get stronger too." She grit her teeth, a new fire burning brightly in her eyes. "I will get stronger. Can you help me with that?" She asked him. And for the first time in a long while she smiled a bright, true, smile.

Aldaris nodded without hesitation. He doesn't know why he wanted to help her; but something tells him that she would be a key player in the near future. A possible ally in the coming years. He could see the determination within her. But before they could begin, she needs to rest and recuperate. "I will help you in your quest to get stronger. But before we could begin, you must rest and regain your strength. I can tell you've been on a long journey without rest. We can begin after that..."

She nodded and hesitantly wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. "Thank you. Thank you, Aldaris." Raven held him tightly as if he were the only true thing in her world. He was an anchor, a beacon of light in a dark, empty sea.

Raven pulled back and glanced at the other fish on sticks. Her hunger had returned, no longer as burdened by the weight of her past. "Do you think I could have another?" she asked him. Although she didn't know why, Raven trusted him. Yes, he'd helped her, but trust after that she'd been through was difficult, and yet, he had hers. She knew he wouldn't hurt her.

Turning to face him, she asked, "How old are you? I don't think you can be much older or younger than myself. I'm ten, by the way."

Aldaris returned the hug. She needed this comfort. She needed to know that at least one person cares. That life has its rays of sunshine amidst the darkness.

He releases the embrace and took another stick and gave it to her. It's just fish, he thought, he can hunt for more later. Right now, his main priority is keeping Raven safe and healthy. "Here, it's alright if you want another. I can just hunt some more later." He said before smiling softly.

"Well, I'm eleven years old. Relatively young to be out here in the woods alone, but I manage." He stood up and stretched before walking towards a couple of leaf bundles near the shelter. He opened one bundle finding some sweet berries inside it. He grabbed a few berries before depositing the bundle. He returned to Raven and offered some of the berries before eating a few himself. "Here, I gathered these berries the other day. They're sweet and good, plus safe to eat."

Raven nodded. "I can help you hunt, at least I can help you hunt fish. Swimming is kind of my strong point." She could sort of hear the fish in his direction so he could capture them. "Eleven? So, you're only a year older than me."

She eyed the berries he held out to her, unsure how much kindness she could accept from him. Then again, she had asked him to help her get stringer. Raven supposed that meant staying together a little while longer. Accepting the berries from him, she nodded and ate them slowly, relishing their taste. She had eaten something similar in her tribe, but it wasn't as sweet. "If you tell me where I can find these, I can help you gather more of them too. I don't want to be a burden. I want to help you after all you've done for me."

Aldaris considered her offer, he could use another hand in gathering some supplies. But he doesn't want to just take advantage of her like that. He could hear her determination and insistence from her voice. With this, he made his decision. "If you insist, Raven. The berries can be found near the camp. Just look for marks on the trees that resembles an a cross with a couple of zigzag lines below it. The bushes are just near those marked trees. I appreciate the help with the fish. Those little pests were annoying to catch." He couldn't help but pout at the last statement. They were quick little buggers. But at least he always manage to catch six or so fishes each day.

If she was to go in the woods, she needs something to protect herself with. He got up and grabbed a long, sturdy, decent sized stick. He took out his knife and carved one end of the stick into a sharp, pointed end. After making the makeshift spear, he pocketed his knife and returned to her. He presented her the spear, a simple weapon she could use. "A little something to keep you safe. It's not much, but it's enough to keep off some of the beasts in the forest."

Raven nodded, taking the stick from him. "Once I get back, we can go hunting for fish." She smiled and took the pouch with her to store them in on the return trip. "I'll see you in a little bit, Aldaris."

It was still light out, so she didn't have to worry about nocturnal predators, but that didn't mean she was safe. Raven had heard that the woods were something to be feared, something to beware of. But she'd just left the biggest monster back in her home. This forest, could throw what it wanted at her. She would defeat them one at a time and she would get stronger.

Picking berries was a careful task. You could squeeze too hard, but you also didn't want to use too little force. It was a balancing act, one that she quite enjoyed for the mundanity of the task. When she finished, she returned to the shelter and stepped inside. "Ready to go catch some fish?" she asked him, holding out the filled pouch.

Aldaris took the berry filled pouched and placed it inside the shelter. He took his spear and an empty pack before he nodded his head. "Yes, let's catch us some fish." They both made their way towards the beach. He slowly waded the cool waters and approached the area where the fish would frequent. He could see them, his current nemesis. He readied his spear, waiting for the right moment to strike. After seeing the moment, he thrust his spear to the water. He lifted his spear and saw he caught something. Upon seeing what he had caught, he dropped his head comically. It was a tiny fish. He sadly deposited the fish inside his pack.

He shook his head in annoyance while muttering curses to the fish in the area. He re-positioned himself and waited for another opportunity to catch another fish.

Raven watched his attempt and laughed lightly. "You really do need some help. First off, you need to build something to divert the fish from the ocean. Gather some sticks and some vines if they grow around here. If you have rope, even better. Make sure the sticks are about this wide and this long. She showed him with her hands what she meant. "Meet me back here in twenty minutes."

Raven returned, sticks and vines in her arms. Laying them out, she stacked the sticks one on top of the other before tying them in place. They were about her height, but not too thick, which made them light enough for her to carry. When he returned, she did the same to his and added them on top of what she had already made. If she were lying it flat on the ground, it looked like a small raft, but that's not what it was.

Tying four stones to the bottom, she walked into the water and angled it out diagonally, so the edge closet to the beach was wedged in the shallow sand. It made a triangle with the shore. The water was the third side, the opening. "I'll herd the fish in your direction, into the triangle, and you just have to get them from there. It's more efficient."

He nodded and readied himself. True to her word, the fish came in great numbers and it became so much more easier to catch them. Before long, his pack was filled with fish that would last them for three days. He looked at Raven, his eyes shinning with appreciation for the well thought out plan. He gave her a thumbs up as he raised the pack full of freshly caught fish. "We did Raven! We have enough fish to last us for three days of continuous eating. Ha! Now fishes...now you shall fear!" He finished while playfully pointing at the open sea. He was grateful about her suggestion and plan. It really did help a lot in their situation of being in the woods. This was an absolute moral booster for the both of them.

Laughing at his exuberance, Raven joined him on the shore, her clothes drying quickly. All clothes were like that where she came from. It was to make travel on land easier for those that went to the surface. "When we get back, we can start preparing the fish to last us. Can't very well let them rot after all our hard work."

She walked along side him, glancing over at Aldaris every once and a while. "So, how long did you have to stay here again? It's a test right to see if you're qualified enough for your true training to begin. Do you thin your master would teach me too?"

When they reached the camp, she borrowed a knife from him and began to gut the fish with practiced skill. She was from the water tribe. Dealing with fish was second nature.

"The test would last for a week. This is the third day so far. As for my master teaching, I think he would accept another student. He's really old, you know. He was extremely happy when I was presented to him as a prospecting hunter-in-training. He kept muttering about, 'Finally I'll be able to pass my knowledge before I leave this life behind'. I'm sure he would accept another student." He said as he deposited his spear and placed the pack of fish near the other supplies.

He grabbed a pouch filled with sea salt and proceeded to rub the fish in order to help preserve them better. He remembered stories of salted meats that can last a long time. So he was testing to see if it can be applied to fish as well. As he was doing this, his gaze fell on Raven who skillfully gutted the fish in her hands. She was a natural, he thought. His master would be proud to have another student like her indeed.

Raven was glad that his master would be open to accepting another student. "How did you meet him?" she asked, setting the guts into a basket. She would dispose of it later. Right now, she was outside of the shelter, but within his camp. No one wanted raw fish guts to be what they smelled at night.

"Do you cook for yourself often? If you don't, I can teach you a really good way to cook fish when you don't have pots or pans. Even if you do cook a lot, I'm sure it would be helpful to know another recipe." She left one fish out, not passing it to him to salt. This was the one they would eat when she returned.

"I'm going to take the guts back to the ocean. I'll take them out deeper, where the bigger predators can have at them. And when I get back, I can teach you, okay?"

Approximately half an hour later, she returned, some leaves flowers in her hands. "Sorry that took so long. It's a long way from the shore. Anyway, pick the petals off these flowers and lay them on the non-skin side of the fish. Then use some of that salt from earlier. Not a lot, but some. After that, we'll wrap them in these Buret tree leaves. It holds in all the flavors. Then, we just place them by the fire and cook them for five minutes on one side and five minuets on the other."

He followed her instructions in cooking the fish. It was really different from what he was used to be doing. He can definitely see the advantages of cooking fish like this. When he was asked about his cooking he had to chuckle nervously. He never cooked, per say. Grilled definitely but cooking was a bit out of his league. "I can grill pretty well but cooking was not my strongest ability. If it's just simple meals then yes I can cook; but if it involves a lot of things like seasoning, sauces and such...well you shouldn't trust me in making those right. But I can learn to do them if someone can teach me."

"As for how I met my master, well my grandfather was one of his friends. They were old travelling companions, last I heard. Good friends, almost like brothers in how close they were. So you can say, he is like an uncle to me due to his relationship with my grandfather. An honorary member of the family, really."
