Art is something that can only be defined by the person who created it. If they put all their effort into it and can bring themselves to call it "art", then that's what it is. Nobody else can claim it's not.

So what exactly grants it immunity from the opinion of someone else?

Common sense.

the thing about common sense it that it's not as common as most people think sooooooo.....i can't really take that as a valid reason to disregard someone else's opinion on something so subjective

Well whether you take it as a valid reason or not is your own right, but many people would obviously agree with me regardless.

I'm deep into an LSD trip right now and here's what I think. It's the most honest expression of the beauty that is deemed indescribable. Some people that don't understand will put down art as something useless, but they don't get it. The term "starving artist" is an example of someone who despite getting driven to the lowest of the low that society paints, they can continue on expressing that beauty in their unique expression of the cosmos. And you try to belittle these people by telling them to attach themselves to money? A concept you created in your mind as something real? Whatever makes you sleep at night.

i could say the exact same thing about my stance on the matter but that doesn't automatically make it law, you get what I'm saying? There has to be something else that defines art other than "because I said so."

The person who creates a piece of work is the only one able to call it art, because they ARE the one the created it after all. Why people cannot understand something so simple is precisely why I hate human beings. Why look for a reason beyond the obvious? Someone who didn't put shit all into the work has no right to judge or label it because they have no idea about the inspiration behind it.

The way I look at art is that it's anything that affects one's emotions and feelings. Weather it be painting, music, dance or cooking.

"A dead fish isn't art!"

I have no objections to modern art in general but when it's blatantly obvious that zero effort has been put into some "works" (such as a white room) and simply exist as a cash grab and is validated because of support from cultural elitists and/or because the "creator" has studied at some fancy school. Making something stupid or offensive is one thing, making "nothing" and calling it "art" is just annoying.

"But if it makes you angry it sets of an emotional response, therefore it is art."

No it isn't the work itself doesn't make me angry, it's the fact that someone labels it as "art" and that is just my personal opinion. Therefore it doesn't count.

If you need to put a label on it to make it "art", it isn't.
