I play League of Legends, and it's a fun game. But more often than not, I've found that they're extremely unoriginal when it comes to champs, skins, etc. It's always a huge rip off of something else. From Pantheon (300), to Caitlyn & Graves (Bizca & Al). This is their latest Academy Series skins, which looks really awesome:

Ahri is the girl with the fox tails. She sort of has an anime-esque look to her, but of course Rito makes it in such a way that it's not 100% anime-like.

They do this to get anime fans to buy their skins and make $$$.

Do you think it's right to disgrace the anime spirit and culture like this?

I personally love the fact that anime is becoming more mainstream and hopefully gets more globalized.

I don't care. Its fine with me.

I heard a lot of them openly admit some characters they make are inspired from some anime characters.

Like Lina The Slayer in Dota 2 was inspired/Designed off of Lina Inverse, the main character of a 90s anime call Slayers (one of my favorites btw)
I wouldn't call it a rip-off more like I shout out or tribute since I loved Slayers & really like them for making a character based off of the main character.

Mabinogi & Maple Story did it as well, and actually literally did use anime's to make money.
Like SNK, SAO & Vocaloid.

Anime themes/stuff shouldn't be restricted to just Japan or Eastern Asia. And when other countries do it, I don't think they're "ripping them off".

I think it's perfectly okay, and that's true for MMOs/MOBAs adopting things from other genres.
For example, the Portal stuff in Dota. Portal has nothing to do with the world of Dota, but it's just a cool little extra for fans of that thing. Same with anime-inspired costume pieces in games like DC Universe.

It's not like a particular anime-inspired thing will make or break someone's decision to play or buy a game. It's just that, in a game with a lot of characters, customization options, etc., it's better to have anime/sci-fi/fantasy/horror/whatever elements in it, so players can use/make "their" character.

Makes this thread for Academy Ahri. Completely ignores Star Guardian Lux which is basically a Sailor Moon skin. League of Legends isn't a super serious game, so there are of course lots of references dotted around like Pantheons joke. Heck a lot of the jokes are references in some way.

Lol... isn't a super serious game... yet it's got a million dollar prize pool and retired pros literally make millions in income just by being commentators on tv....... right.

Yeah I forgot about sailor moon lux, sorry.

But you bring up a great point that's been bothering me about LoL. I mean, it's like... they'd rather research already-created characters from anime, comics, movies, and then create a champ based on that -- rather than literally coming up with something new.....

I mean, even the names aren't unique -_-.

Wow, you must share those cosplay pics :D. I wanna see a hot redhead in a schoolgirl uniform looking all nonchalant with her cellphone but have magic powers as well.

But, yeah when I first saw the skin in the client, they only showed her face and cellphone, so I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT: WOOT TEEN ANNIE SKIN THANK YOU RITO!

But no... no... they went with ahri... idk why. Schoolgirl zyra would've worked just as well. Or Kat YES KAT. OMGOSH KAT IS ACTUALLY A REDHEAD ANYWAY It should've been kat!

I get your point of this topic Lambofgenesis because when I started getting into anime they recently came out on tv with Totally Spies and a few other series that had the anime look, but toit started feeling like a rip off. Same with a lot of the "anime" style shows they put out nowadays just feels somewhat like they are trying to cash in on something. I can see how one would think using the style would get a sells increase with anime fans but it would also be the same way with all of the other styles they release like said before scifi, horror, or sexy would just be cash cowing.

By isn't super serious I mean more along the lines of, it's not some dark deep story with a dark deep back-story to it. It's a slime guy, little girl, robot, and old time wizard fighting in a battle for "reasons".

And I call complete bullshit on what you said. A lot of the new champions are pretty damn original. Heck the last champion that felt like an reference to something was Jinx, and her character drew inspiration from multiple sources. The only reason some of the skins end up being references is because being references sells more.

I really don't see anything wrong with using an anime-esque art style.

I don't know anything about the game, but as far as I am concerned,
they can draw their promo material in whatever art style they want.

Anime to me is not really
any kind of sacred. It's just my word
for Japanese animation, specifically Japanese cartoons.

I think it's pretty great.

It's like adding two of my favourite things together to make one even better thing.

p.s. I really dig Brand's Cryocore skin, so Mr Freeze.
Oh also Singed's Bane skin.
