If you're upset this isn't about anime, bugger off alright?

So the US is well known for its gun culture.

I know this site has a global audience so I already realize most of you will advocate gun control. For those of you outside of the US, please at least keep in mind that the US has millions and millions of guns and you can't just poof them away with a law. Don't be unreasonable. I advise against ignorantly stating 'well we're doing great over here without them!'. It is also wise to keep in mind that the US constitution provides a right to bare arms.

Onto the debate matter. So here's some background. Most tragedies involving firearms are often followed by demands for stricter gun control. However, those demands for stricter gun control laws decrease after the initial upset begins to rest. You can find evidence of this in many polls.

The most prominent argument for gun rights involves security against potential tyranny and invasion. Most people as it is now do not trust the US government. The people should not fear their government, the government should fear its people. Giving up the ability of citizens to fight against such potentiality is ripping more power away from the people and placing it within the hands of a government you already do not trust.

It also goes without saying that guns make it much harder to launch an invasion upon the home front. You'd have a lot easier time invading a country that isn't riddled with guns. Dur.

Gun control advocates argue that gun availability increases homicide rates. This is the most prominent argument.

Gun rights and control advocates both (majority wise) demand for stricter background checks and restrictions on firearms to those mentally ill.

For those of you unaware of some key differences.

Machine gun (Fully-Automatic): A weapon that continues to fire until it runs out of ammunition, so long as the trigger is pulled down.
Semi-Automatic: Civilian version of a military machine gun, one that is less capable of rapid fire. Although the firearm automatically reloads, a shooter must pull the trigger separately in order to fire another round.
Manual operation: Loaded one shot at a time by the user rather than automatically.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of gun related death. However, there hasn't been any notable correlation between the two. Gun control does not affect suicide rates. Keep this in mind when using statistics. Gun related deaths are not the same as gun related homicides or crime. Suicide is the leading cause of gun-related deaths across the country in recent years. This is a horrendous word play often used in articles by the media. Please do not fall for 'omg gun deaths high'. Some even incorporate suicides into 'gun violence' statistics. So be careful about that.

Gun violence by state:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States_by_state

--------------------

With all that said and done my personal position on the matter is one that advocates reasonable gun control/rights. I advocate much stricter background checks and restriction on the ability for mentally ill persons to possess firearms. If you got BPD, for example, you shouldn't own a god damn gun. I also support laws that restrict machine guns in particular (making them less easily available than manual/semi-automatic).

I do not agree with arguments that state gun ownership prevents violence. It doesn't. It does provide personal self defense, but it does not prevent homicide. I do agree what it prevents is potential tyranny. It provides a power within citizens that the government should always rightfully fear.

I find half naked women with guns to be sexy.

I do advocate for some gun control. I mean, if you look at the whole picture, Cars are harder to own then guns.

Well, the gun laws in the US aren't going to change... if they were, one of the school shootings would have made a change. I guess children dying isn't enough for people to want gun control...

Yeah. I'm not sure why the punishment for illegal firearms possession is so lenient though. I honestly feel it should be a lot harsher than it currently is.

Probably because you can have an illegal firearm without using them for illegal actions.

Like some collectors.

psh too late now, might as well loosen all gun control. The U.S. loves it's guns. It's in our constitution, and that ain't going away so there's that. Loosen the laws and make it even easier, were at like a retarded half point where, I say we go full guns. Can't beat em join em.

Of course you won't see me with a gun.

Ah. I see.

Though there's a striking correlation in the amount of use illegal firearms get with crime that harms legal gun ownership. I can't find myself supporting illegal gun ownership for any reason because of that. It's illegal for a reason, hah.

I see absolutely no need for private citizens to be owning high rate of fire guns with giant clip sizes, and I certainly think that there should be much greater control over who gets to own guns. I also believe that current carry laws (be it concealed or open) are far too lenient.

So I guess I'm in favor of stricter gun control

Some interesting statistics I found:

http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=4616

For those of you not bothered to read:

+Firearm-related homicides declined 39%, from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011.
+Nonfatal firearm crimes declined 69%, from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 victimizations in 2011.
+Firearm violence accounted for about 70% of all homicides and less than 10% of all nonfatal violent crime from 1993 to 2011.
+From 1993 to 2011, about 70% to 80% of firearm homicides and 90% of nonfatal firearm victimizations were committed with a handgun.
+Males, blacks, and persons ages 18 to 24 had the highest rates of firearm homicide from 1993 to 2010.
+About 61% of nonfatal firearm violence was reported to the police in 2007-11.

I don't see guns as the root of gun violence, same as I don't want knives restricted because of violence caused by people carrying them.
Guns don't kill people, crazy people kill people.

So I want guns to be prohibited to anyone that can't pass a mental test.
