Any recommendations on what is good to read?

I know it's probably down to personal preference but I'm looking for easy(ish) things that aren't necessarily for children.

For example, I read something recently about a bus driver who fell asleep at the wheel, almost died and had a dream about some really weird things which was cool.

I mean, I'll read anything but if I'm bored to tears or overwhelmed by Kanji then I probably won't persist ><

Any ideas?

Unfortunately no specific recommendations myself. Me, I mail order manga from Japan, but I'm just learning the language for fun. From your other posts, it seems like you've more serious ambitions. Using manga, it'd be like someone learning English only from comic books. In Chinese class, while we started with dialogues and then short reading passages written presumably by the textbook authors, by late third year, we were reading actual short stories and essays by real Chinese authors. Using actual literature, one learns from examples of what is considered good written Chinese. (French class for me was also similar, reading a short novel by third year.) There may be books of selected stories or essays similarly for Japanese, written by bona fide Japanese literati. I think I've seen such in bookstores but can't recall actual titles.

I'd suggest light novels but I don't really know your preferences. They are aimed at young adults so they can be pretty fun to read. Many have furigana so you wouldn't be too overwhelmed. Book-wise, I like morimi tomohiko's stories. If you seek a challenge, try murakami haruki's stories. They are challenging of you doing know kanji though.

Actually, I have a bunch of recommendations. As I've said in other threads, I'm a bookphile so I tend to buy lots of stuff.

One thing I highly recommend is dual language books: one page has the text in Japanese and the other is a translated version in English. The better books also come with vocab at the bottom of each page and grammar notes. These ones from Kodansha are good:
Breaking into Japanese Literature: Seven Modern Classics in Parallel Text
Read Real Japanese Essays: Contemporary Writings by Popular Authors
Read Real Japanese Fiction: Short Stories by Contemporary Writers

I admit that these can be a bit advanced, but they are still good to learn from.

You can also find some easy(ish) manga to read. You can always browse what is available from Comic Walker and see if there's one at your difficult level and start from there.
http://comic-walker.com/

There are some English translations there, but the majority are only in Japanese, plus only the last few chapters are available.

I can make more recommendations, but this is a good start. Reading will help improve your skills, so it's an important thing to work on.

I have since gone and bought a ton of books off Amazon thanks to all these recommendations...

One of my favourite reading sources so far is: http://shop.whiterabbitjapan.com/products/the-complete-set-japanese-graded-readers they are just really hard to come by and ordering off Amazon is an expensive pain in the butt due to the only copies being miles overseas.

I have read a few things on: http://hukumusume.com/douwa/ but I spend some time yawning at it, I think it'd be great for kids but I often fall asleep.

Thanks for that comic walker recommendation... I've found something about cat battles that looks like it might be interesting.. haha.
