I've never driven an Automatic, and I never intend to - the idea of doing so just seems, so strange to me. Surely it's a nicer feeling to be fully in control while driving? Taking some of that control away from me would probably make me quite nervous!

When I was a freshman in college, I wanted to visit a friend who was in school about 4 hrs away from where I was. Told my parents as I had no car to see if I could borrow one they said, "Sure, but it's our Escort & it's a stick." I rolled with it and on that 4 hour journey, taught myself how to drive a stick. I don't drive one regularly now, but I still know how.

Oh yeah, my father taught me how to drive a stick-shift and I'm very glad he did. I love driving a manual transmission, you feel so much more in control and attuned with a vehicle than driving automatic.

I've only driven an automatic once and got on fine with it but that was only around town. One thing I've always wondered is does an automatic help you brake?

When you're doing 60 or so and have to stop or slow down quickly I come out of 5th and go to 3rd so the engine helps slow the car as well as using the brakes. As you're not using the brakes so heavily there's less chance of brake fade or locking up the wheels which makes sense, can auto's recognise this situation and assist? Just curious...

Yup. And I much prefer a stick-shift than an automatic.
Keeps me awake, especially on long drives.
