I've always wanted to get into anime but never really know what to start watching. I've only really watched the shonen jump anime's and kill la kill and that's about it. I like more action oriented anime but if there is a good slice of life anime to start with that'll show why that genre is popular I'd love to hear about it. Just wanna know what's a good place top start for different genre's.

Yeah, once you create a thread, there's nothing you can do to edit the title except have a moderator change it. I've gone ahead and fixed the typos.

I like slice of life as long as they aren't a certain kind of "cute girls doing cute things" shows. Two that I do like a lot (one centered on girls, the other on boys) are:

Non Non Biyori
You and Me

Those are both pretty mellow with not much happening. For something with a bit more story and focus I agree with the recommendation from the post above of
Kids on the Slope

Finally, two completely different shows, which aren't slice of life, but are two of my favorites to recommend:

Gankutsuou
Tonari no Seki-kun

Some shows here on crunchyroll you could try are:

Parasyte: An awesome action sci-fi horror.
Sword Art Online: Another action anime.
Akame Ga Kill: A violent and gory action anime.
Attack On Titan: Massively popular action horror anime (just in case you haven't seen it yet)
The Pet Girl Of Sakarasou: A really good drama/comedy with romance elements.
Another: Psychological horror.
Toradora!: A really good comedy romance.
The Fruit Of Grisaia: A different kind of harem style anime with really dark elements and one of the coolest protagonists ever.

Slice of life

For slice of life / comedy the place to start is K-on! No show does it better.
on Hulu / The Anime Network

You might also want to give these shows a try:

YUYUSHIKI
http://www.crunchyroll.com/yuyushiki

AIURA - episodes are only a few minutes long
http://www.crunchyroll.com/aiura

Locodol - While this show falls into the idol category its really more of slice of life show.
http://www.crunchyroll.com/locodol

Shows that are not slice of life but incorporate some aspects into the show:

YUKI YUNA IS A HERO - This is one of those shows that are not what they look like at first glance. While it looks like it should be slice of life / cute girls doing cute things (and some of the episodes are extremely good examples of it) it is in fact a fairly grim action-adventure show (takes a few episodes for this part of the show to fully kick in).

SCHOOL-LIVE! - Part recommendation, part warning this show is really really really not what it looks like at first glance. While it has a lot of aspects of a slice of life / cute girls doing cute things show, it is firmly in the horror genre. Watch ALL of the first episode and you will see what I mean.

Some of shows that might interest you:

Love Live! School Idol Project - Best idol singer show ever. Great cast of characters, good music and none of the idol industry crap that drags on the other idol shows.
http://www.crunchyroll.com/love-live-school-idol-project

SHIROBAKO - A really well made love letter to the anime industry that, surprisingly, does not pull any punches. No illusions here, you really have to love your job to make it in this industry.

Sound! Euphonium - High school drama involving high school band. really good.
http://www.crunchyroll.com/sound-euphonium

Chihayafuru - High school / sports drama involving a very unique sport.
http://www.crunchyroll.com/chihayafuru

Action-adventure

Gurren Lagann - Same creative team as Kill la Kill. Most EPIC show ever.

Broken Blade

Attack on Titan

Fate/stay night

Fate/Zero - prequel to Fate/stay night.

GIRLS und PANZER - WW2 tanks blasting each other into scrap in competitive tank battles.

Honestly Slice of Life has always been a genre that confused me. I always wondered if Slice of Life has to take place in the modern time and have no general direction. Some people say yes and some no. I believe you can have other genres in SoL (I could be wrong and probably am) so I'll suggest a few I consider SoL.

Angel Beats - It's a fantasy, a romance and a comedy but I'm pretty sure it's a SoL too.
Sabagebu - It's a comedy but as Seinfeld says it's also about nothing...but the friendship of the club members.
Love Lab - Comedy about a school club and it's members. No fantasy elements just standard school day fun.
Say I Love You - Romance between two high school students.
Servant x Service - Comedy about workers in a government office.
Working!/Wagnaria! - Comedy about restaurant workers.
Re-kan - A comedy/drama SoL about a girl who can see and talk to ghosts,
Soranowoto - About a group of young girls training to become soldiers in the next World War.
The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior - Comedy (to the extreme) SoL about a group of broken people living together.
Celestial Method - SF SoL.

As far as action goes...
Asura Cryin'
Aldnoah.zero
Btooom!
Blue Exorcist
Chaika - The Coffin Princess
Hamatora
Nobunagun
Rwby
Strike the Blood
Brynhildr in the Darkness
