Is fanservice really a bad thing?

If we're talking about fanservice like "dat plot", I don't really like it. Even when the series uses fanservice in a humorous way, it usually just feels cringey. In worst cases it ruins the "feel" of the series.

As for the small nods to the series' previous work (or to other series), I actually like them a lot. Spotting them is very amusing and they can provide as good entertainment on their own. I found Metal Gear Solid 4 a blast to play simply because it felt like Official MGS Fanfiction: The Game. Reference here, references there, references everywhere! It was so hilarious to find all the small little nods to the series.

As long as it is not too much fan-service.

Depends there is a right time and a long time.

Fanservice isn't a bad thing but it will stop people from watching your show.

Fanservice should exist if the show is a fan service type show otherwise being in there it is kind of offputting and made me drop several anime.

But that's my personal opinion it's a matter of there is a time and place

It depends on the anime of course, but as long as it doesn't distract from the overall story of the anime then I don't see a problem with it.

Fan service is fine as a pallet cleanser in the middle of a season, but if a show is just plain ecchi for the sake of plot, I'd rather not watch. There are some shows on CR that make me think a 13 year old boy wrote the script.

I don't have a problem with fanservice, so long as it doesn't get in the way of the story. So basically, I agree with the OP in that, it's fine when it's not excessive.

I'm reading the Fairy Tail manga right now, and the more excessive fanservice seems to be played more for laughs than anything. I'm on chapter 242 now, and I have to say that I now merely sigh whenever Lucy loses her shirt or Grey is taking off his clothes. The real fanservice as far as I'm concerned is Natsu's abs. Their appearances are subtle and wonderful.

Ecchi is for comedy and not something that should be mixed with drama or action. Fanservice is a vague term. Poorly written characters are the big issue with anime.

Too much fan service ruins the whole anime for me. Had to stop watching tons of animes because of this...

If its a serious or dramatic story then I think the fan service should be kept low, but for ecchi shows its part of why people watch them. Then there's stories in the middle like Monogatari that imo use it to give people a breather + comedy relief. I do think some take it too far even for 'ecchi' series and I roll my eyes at them. I will say there should be more service for females at least in order to balance it out, like Food Wars does it.

I didn't mind it long time ago, but now that I'm trying to get back to anime, I cringe everytime because sometimes it's just too excessive and unnecessary
