1860, vodka, the national drink, was the source of 40% of the government's revenue.
1911, vodka comprised 89% of all alcohol consumed in Russia.
When a bottle is opened, it is customary to finish it.

Don't get in a drinking contest with an elderly Russian woman, you'll lose.
Yeah XP you will loose..
Also I remember one time a russian heli was suppost to save someone from a plane crash before (they could only take up a few since they had too much vodka stored, vodka = water of life or something like that..) was not much clean stuff back then and people drank a lot more..
back to the heli now, so what happend was it crashed as well... after having too much vodka on it and a couple of the survivers from theplane crash.

Because it tastes like fucking rubbing alcohol straight. Screwdrivers are fine.
I don't know what you're on about strength though. I'll admit sake doesn't have the most pleasant taste, but it's usually only half the proof of stronger drinks like vodka and whiskey.

Because it tastes like shit. Only reason you would do that is to punish yourself.

In college vodka was my favorite drink. I always had it straight, usually in shots. I can't say it tasted good, but it wasn't terrible either. I liked the way you could feel it hit your stomach.

Now I rarely drink and would never have vodka. Even thinking about it makes me gag a little. Guess I had too much. When I do drink I prefer beer or good whiskey.

I can drink vodka straight because I have no choice to. If I didn't drink it straight, it will bring shame to my Polish family. Whose actually drink vodka during breakfast. But unlike my family, I only able to drink premium type vodka, they could drink cheap plastic kind, egh!

My first vodka was when I was 11 years old. I had three shots and I crushed. Damn, Polish.

Usually you do shots and you do a beer back or something to kill off the taste, same goes for 151, everclear or some other high proof bad tasting alcohol.

I'm sure this is obvious by now but people do drink vodka straight. Reyka vodka from Iceland is a really easy vodka to drink, although I still prefer to mix it with some soda or mineral water and lemon juice.

I recently discovered a liqueur from Ogden, Utah called Underground. It's an herbal liqueur so it's very strong in flavor and pretty sweet. Think Jagermeister, but less syrupy and generally way more delicious. It does have guarana in it, which has caffeine. Mixing caffeine and alcohol in substantial quantities is pretty bad for you so take it easy. (Of course drinking is bad for you so you should take it easy regardless)

Buffalo Trace is my favorite bourbon. 'nuff said.

And last but not least there is Chartreuse. At around $54 for a 750ml bottle, it's nothing to sneeze at. However, at 50% alcohol (100 proof), and with such a prominent flavor, a little goes a long way. My favorite way by far to drink chartreuse is in hot chocolate. Nothing beats it on a cold day.

My understanding is that vodka is frequently consumed neat in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia to name three places. If you've a high quality vodka that goes down smooth this is fine, but I really can't recommend trying it with the bottom shelf stuff. The flavour of discount vodka is too powerful for me when it's neat, so I mix that with fruit juice or cola to avoid becoming nauseous. I have a similar problem with hot sake, preferring to drink it cold for that reason.
