Post Reply What Level Of Anime Fandom Are You?

Casual. I don't watch a lot of anime, usually only 2-3 shows per season. I've never been fascinated about anime merchandise, mostly only ever expressing a desire to own Robot Damashii kits.

Average but i have seen 160+ animes read visual novels and light novels and like to be part of the community i have also been known to try eroges

So i guess i would say im average but i can imagine someone mistakingly putting me into the otaku level

That being said i own very little anime and own next to no anime stuff.

I have watched all my anime from illegal mediums (before crunchyroll and ones that don't get subbed plz no sue me if i can buy it for a reasonable price i do buy it :D) or renting from video shops only very few i have been able to buy.

As soon as i get a good career though im planning to buy a ton of anime goods and dvds ASAP

.....now that i think about it everyone who works in the I.T department i volunteer for watches anime and pirates except for me (i only stream)....well STRAYA For you i would rather pay for my good then steal them ^^

Average, although lately, I doubt the number of episodes I've been watching in one day can be considered average hahahaaaaa.....

Just wondering what level everyone here classifies themselves as.

I'm sure theres other scales out there but lets just use this one. I tried to encompass every type of anime fan I know. I apologize if I left something out that directly correlates 2 U. These are extremely broad generalizations and not all the listed points are needed for you to classy yourself under a certain category.

The Mainstreamer

I'm assuming no one on this site falls under this one categorically but I'll just throw it on here. These types of fans only adore big shonen series. They really only watch series like DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, and One piece. They might watch some Attack on Titan to mix it up a little. Not really interested in anything else.

The "Filthy" Casual

Among other things, anime is simply a pleasant past time. They watch whatever, whenever you feel like it. They'll pick up a few series every season and watch it whenever they're board. Typically, these are not the type of people that who anticipate the weekly new episode of ______ This type of fan owns close to no merchandise regarding anime.

The Average Anime Fan

This type of anime fan is quite knowledgable when it comes to seasonal series. Probably watched a couple of big shonen series (Naruto,Bleach, DBZ, One piece) They know whats coming out this season and what they're strictly interested in. Types of fans that know what day their shows come out with a new episode. Probably owns a poster and a few manga volumes. Not super into spending money on merchandise but they make it a point to pick up something regarding their favorite series.

The Superfan

These types of fans are also quite knowledgable when it comes to seasonal anime. They at least know whats airing.... But they have a wide variety of knowledge regarding a couple series they love. They make it a point to obtain as much merchandise they possibly can regarding their favorite series. Doesn't necessarily have to be super dedicated to a certain series but they do feel super passionately about certain series. This category is something for the people a little higher then your average fan.

The Critic

A typical critic loves anime a lot Just imagine Erina from Shokugeki no Soma

These types of people tend to judge a lot more harshly. They have honed their anime senses to the sharpest edge. What may be pleasantly enjoyable to an average fan may be complete garbage to the critic. They are typically observers and analysts of the anime community. Judging the anime from production, music, animation, ect. They tend to be harder to please since they know what good animation really is. They don't hate anime but most of the critics I know despise the direction anime is heading towards. In fact, most critics probably own numerous volumes of manga and DVDs.

The Radical

Die hard fans that really like anime in short. They have knowledge on seasonal anime and have probably completed some of your major shonen series. These types of fans will end up watching the majority of the anime that comes out every season. These types of fans are likely to actively collect manga and DVDs in greater quantities. I'm talking hundreds and hundreds of manga. Most likely have a couple figures of their waifus/husbandos or characters they really liked. You can tell someones in this category just by walking into their room. This type of fan is not scared to show their love for anime. They have a dakimakura or two..

The Otaku

Just imagine a "The Radical" on steroids. Most likely the fans that have at least 250+ anime's under their belt. Will actively seek all the anime industry related news they can find. Not only is their knowledge extensive, so is their collection. This type of fan will collect a little of everything and anything anime related. They probably have a list of their favorite artist, have a favorite doujin circle, and owns numerous amounts of other merchandise. They make anime a prime time hobby. Just like some of us are sneaker heads they invest a lot of their money into this hobby. Types of guys that will actually go out and learn Japanese to read light novels and play eroge. Rather, guys that buy light novels even though they can't read them. (I'm not talking about wanting to learn. The people that actually that actually go and do it. )Variety wise the Otaku's collection is far greater than the Almost Otaku's.

I'd say I'm somewhere in between "The Radical" and "The Otaku". I'm really vested into figure and doujin collecting. It is my greatest and most enjoyable past time. I follow anime news like an elderly follows the news during presidential season.

I don't care much for the sarcasm and diminuative labels, regardless of source. Yeah, its very cynical, even if its maybe unintentional. But, no matter, let's proceed anyway:

The Mainstreamer: I'm not really sure but everyone starts here. Then they either stay or change into one of the other groups.
The "Filthy" Casual : Same as above, but now has acquired the thirst for more anime. Knowledgeable? Possibly. "More appreciative?" I cannot say.:/
The Average Anime Fan New Anime v. Old Anime, bias against latter but with an air of superiority. Weeaboo dementia symptoms.

* waves off the rest*

I don't think it is necessary to have that many boxes, I would have went with three, if not two. But I can't say it matters. I don't know the source or if this is officially acceptable criteria, so, I won't go after you for its naivete.

The three:
1)Watches adult swim, watches CR, funi, hulu, DVDs( or whatever ) for, say, a handful of shows recommended or seen, atm doesn't care.
2)Watches adult swim, watches CR, funi, hulu, DVDs( or whatever ) for, say, more than a handfull of shows recommended or seen, is interested in other shows, follows recommendations, maybe later keeps up with trends, simulcasts, learns culture, language etc., maybe not.
3)Watches adult swim, watches CR, funi, hulu, DVDs( or whatever ) buys body pillows to rape and molest, cosplays 24-7, goes overboard. Not that its bad, but its your thing, have fun, you only live once. Follow your passions.

I'd say somewhere between the average anime fan and the critic. I've been watching anime long enough and seen so many series I feel that I can give a decent critique of whether an anime is really all that good or not, due to having a vast knowledge of tropes, plots, etc. etc.

Between Average and Critic, but not a Superfan. I watch a lot of anime, 300+ series, including almost all new series, but I stay away from 100+ episode anime because the story becomes convoluted garbage past that point no matter what it is. That said, I don't own ANY merchandise aside from DVD/BluRay, and a few manga/short stories/etc. of anime I watched and thoroughly enjoyed. I cannot read or understand anything other than English, however I refuse to watch most dubs. As with SakeMaster above, I can give a fairly unbiased review of anime I watch, and I actually do so on another website that I'll refrain from advertising here. People have told me I have strange standards because I often rate things below 6, but as far as I'm concerned, 5 is average, and considering personal preferences, I've found myself enjoying anime that I ended up rating a 4/10.

Basically, I'm die-hard into the STORY, not the merchandise. I've got videogames and tattoos that drain all my money that isn't going towards "adult" living expenses.

Go Canada. I don't know.. I've seen tons of shows, some of which are waaay out there, but I've never thought to take it that seriously. I lean towards the darker side than much of what is on here, but I love lots of comedies, lighter stuff, and different genres, and I've too read my share of manga. Meh, I just don't file the stuff and want to turn pro with my hobby, I'm "good".

That's kinda a hard question. I would say that the level at which I engage with anime would be atleast The Critic level; I love reading news about upcoming anime, I know my favourite studios and directors, I can name a lot of voice actors when I'm watching the shows and I get really excited about upcoming stuff featuring the VAs/Studios that I like. If I'm felling upto a challenge I'll translate some of my manga, or watch a kids/shonen anime without subtitles to try to boost my Japanese comprehension.

However, due to where I live, time and money constraints, and trying to keep up with other hobbies, I'm probably only at the level of the average fan for the other stuff. I don't really collect merch, I don't talk about anime to anyone other than the friends I have that watch it, and I really dislike going to anime conventions, and there are only ever a few shows that I can watch/ want to watch each season.

So... I dunno. Seems kinda hard to fit into one of those categories like that >.<
