I have noticed that lately, some of the shows are being censored with things like the glare censor, that is, in itself a real pain as it washes out half or more of the scenes, AND[/b], often the whole show itself wasn't intended for younger viewers, so that it is actually inappropriate to censor it, instead of insuring that it is labelled as mature content... Convenient censorship is fine to prevent the shows from being truly HENTAI, instead of being just Ecchi as was intended by the writers/mangaka... I especially like the humorous censors used in Demon King Daimao (along with the sound effects), while preventing the Anime from becoming just another hentai, they added some suggestive humor to the whole scene...
I won't say that censorship is bad in and of itself, but, it should be appropriately applied, and not detract from the work... A lot of times it is used in the same was as adding a loincloth to Michelangelo's David would be. Not only detracting from the details, but, instead, also drawing MORE attention to a minor part of the work.

In most cases it's straight up just a way to..
a) cover their own asses in case someone DOES get upset about lack of censorship
b) to sell the uncensored BluRay

What you're referring to as censorship that detracts from the work by adding half a screen of white glare or shadow, is all because of point b.

This is well known in the anime community, and I agree with the gentleman below you, the moment someone complains about lack of censorship, loss, and more censorship.

Well, these shows are broadcast on TV and since there aren't really any "you're too young to be watching that" police, (aside from parents but people find ways around that) it's most likely required. I look at it as they can add the stuff that gets censored because it's usually aired later in the night, kind of similar to how on American TV once it gets past a certain time the rules seem to get a little more loose, but they can't just go crazy with it due to the people who say what can and can't be aired, if that makes sense.

Honestly though, I am not bothered by it at all even if it takes up half the screen, because what am I really missing other than some T&A or super violence, which can be nice to see sometimes but mainly has little to no story significance anyway.

I find it downright ridiculous that they have to censor Jotaro's cigarettes in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

I'm well aware that they do so because they can't have underage people smoking on television, but it's the law in question is what I find stupid.

It's perfectly acceptable to show teenagers fighting, cussing or getting their clothes off, but somehow smoking is off limits.

It's think's like this that make certain mangas way better.
One of the weirdest censhorships imo was when they changed Neji's forehead symbol in Naruto, however that was changed because the sponsors of the show made them.

They changed that for the western audience mainly, people are too over zealous about the symbol. Sadly due to hitler using the symbol in reverse the original is almost unheard of anymore, because it just brings up too many memories. I even know the original meaning of it but every time i see the symbol it automatically makes me think of the bad version. People who dont know about it will just automatically assume the worst.

As for censorship in general, it used to be all about the black bars and pixelations, these days they try to make it more a part of the show, aka darkness, light beams/steam.

The reason its done is so they can show it on regular channels and to more of a general audience, then they sell the uncensored version on blu-ray for a jacked up price and its double the profit for them.

We just have to deal with the cards of what CR gets and hope for the best, otherwise you can sub to Funimation/Sentai filmworks and get the uncensored versions for streaming or buy the disks.

The same happened in One Piece

But I can't blame them. Hitler bastardized that symbol so it's only natural they don't want to step into dangerous territories.

Well the diffrence between the two are quit noticeable but at first glance people's minds will go to Hitler. However Neji's symbol was changed in the japanese version of the anime not when it went to America. They didn't change Ichigo's sword hilt though.

There is also heavy heavy heavy censoring in the electric tale of pikachu Pokemon manga.

There was also the famous censoring of the yuri boat scene in ghost In the shell manga.

Yeah lol, when actual Jotaro smokes they put a huge black blob over his face but when Oingo is using his face this happens:

It reminds me of they made Rock Lee drink "potion" to trigger his drunken boxing style. OK.

Edit: Oh, also censoring the swastika from eastern media really annoys the shit out of me. Like, instead of censoring add a cultural note or something to educate people instead of capitulating to their ignorance.

Part of it is the fact that you would be shocked at what some people object to. In the late '90s I was doing tech support. I had a woman call in wanting a way to pet her son look at college web sites, but also preventing him frmo seeing women who had even short skirts on. Another example was a article I read the other day. It was bout ridiculous one star reviews of tourist attractions. One of the reviews had a woman complaining about bikinis at a swimming pool.
The censors have to err on the side of caution. Plus, as others have pointed out, the censorship also sells disks in Japan.

Personally I love the way some ecchi animes censor themselves, if anyone has seen the censored version of Recently my sister is unusual, its pretty amazing. It makes it one of the most unintentionally funny animes I've ever seen.

As far as censorship overall goes I'd say the way "My wife is the student council president" handles it might be the best method, that is having 2 versions. Though I will say that I'd rather have 'barbie doll anatomy, 'adding in some covering' or 'objects conveniently placed' methods over the screen glare or censor bars, because the prior are limited in impacting/blocking everything else going on.
