oh yes. the backstreet boys were my favorite hip hop artists. i'm glad you reminded me of them.

Are you serious?! Backstreet Boys are hiphop artists?

From Wikipedia:

Hip hop music is a style of popular music, typically consisting of a rhythmic, rhyming vocal style called rapping (also known as emceeing) over backing beats and scratching performed on a turntable by a DJ. Emceeing, DJ-ing, breakdancing and graffiti art comprise the four elements of Hiphop, a cultural movement which began in New York City in the 1970s, predominantly among African Americans and Latinos.[1] The term rap music is sometimes used synonymously with hip hop music, though it is also used to refer specifically to the practice of rapping.

I don't remember seeing Backstreet Boys rappin'. :o

mainstream is. i wouldn't even call new "hip hop" hip hop. it's more like dance music, just made to sound good and catchy. i personally don't care cause it means it'll be easier to make millions off of one catchy hit lol.

I agree with that first bit. Artists need to start caring about what they put into their lyrics. They needa make sense first of all. secondly they need to have a message and meaning in the song. Most people like songs only because of the tune and beat. get someone who dresses fly and add shitty lyrics and you have what people these days call a banga. BS. This is the reason so many people are hatin on 'us' these days. Without the producer who made the track 'artists' like Soulja Boy n Hurricane Chris would be nothin. NOTHIN. But people needa stop hatin' on Hip-Hop n sayin' they hate it. At least respect it ya know. I don't like American rock that much but I respect those who listen to it (even metal) and encourage my rocker friends to go out n make a band. heh anyway y'all get it

Well i wouldn't say hip hop is "dead" persay...but it is dying out...record sales are lower than they've been in almost 20 years, The mainstream hip hop is diluted to such a horrible extent it's become so generic, repetitive and cliche no artist really has anything new or intelligent to say.

So unless something drastic happens Hip hop shall go the way of metal and have to return to the underground and try to reinvent it's self into something with more subtsnace and individuality.

Hip-Hop aint nothin but 'The New Hokey Pokey'- Instructions on how to dance. Its based on gimmicks. The 'Industry' of hip-hop? Still breathin, thanx to gullible mofos spending their $ on it.
The 'Art' of hip-hop? Rest in peace....

The exit of a genre from the mainstream is sometimes the best thing that can happen to it.

I think there is a lot of great hip hop out there - you just really need to dig for it. The mainstream hip hop is absolute shit, with very rare exception. Sales are plummeting. While hip hop will never really leave, it's getting lower and lower key.

I think black culture is also going through some changes right now. It's really starting to fight back at some of the negative reputation it has garnered over the last 20 years or so thanks over exposure and the romanticism of the black urban lower class. This will undoubtedly have an impact on hip hop, though for the better or not is uncertain.

But artists like Kanye, Common, Wyclef, n Nas are writing legit stuff about life in general n workin hard to achieve what you want. They are the ones who'll bring hip-hop back to stardom. So no. Hip-hop ain't dead

I don't really think Kanye is adding to hip hop. His music is ok, nothing spectacular (though miles ahead of his mainstream competition).

His personality though... the guy is an arrogant jackass to nth degree. Hell, he makes Trevor look as humble as a buddhist monk. He actually said if a Bible were written today, he is important enough to be mentioned. Not too forget to mention all his other BS.

Nas isn't as good as he used to be. He was great, then sold out, then came back but is still tarnished in my opinion. Once again, miles ahead of the competition... but still lacking. Old Nas is solid gold though.
